It’s been a long day for the 200 players in Jonkoping, as they had to go through seven rounds of swiss to determine the standings two rounds before the end. After more than ten hours of competition, NA champion Ryan “Purple” Root and Na`Vi star Frederik “Hoej” Nielsen are tied for the top with flawless 7-0’s.
This is a big win for GamersOrigin’s playing coach. After emerging as the best player on his continent, Purple had a tough run at the World Championship finals, losing in the group stage despite being counted among the favorites for the trophy. With two more matches to go, Purple is a lock for the playoffs of DHW.
While Hoej was reaping heads, his Na`Vi team-mates did not share the same success. Fresh off his World Championship title, Sebastian “Ostkaka” Engwall lost a critical match in Round 7 to Hermisen, which put him at a score of 4-3, a mathematical elimination from the tournament. Sebastian “Xixo” Bentert is also out of the tournament, ending on a 2-5 record despite starting with a strong 2-1 in the early rounds.
One of the biggest stories of the tournament was also SK Gaming’s intimidating presence on the battlefield. The sextet of Esteban “AKAWonder” Serrano, Jesper “Frekeh” Ericsson, Sebastian “Spo” Sjöbäck, Martin “MartinCreek” Bäcklund, Filip “Numberguy” Samuelsen” and Dawid “Zetalot” Skalski are all in the running for playoffs spot, each one of them in the top 50 after day one.
