Sam Raimi and Josh Cooley will lead the movie adaptation of Roblox’s 99 Nights in the Forest.
Roblox’s hit survival game 99 Nights in the Forest was confirmed to be getting a film adaptation five months ago, and while details surrounding the project have remained ambiguous for some time, it’s finally picking up steam.
Under the wings of 20th Century Studios, one of the world’s major film studios, 99 Nights in the Forest has been handed over to prominent filmmakers Sam Raimi and Josh Cooley, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
Sam Raimi is best known for directing the Evil Dead trilogy, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, and Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He has also produced several popular horror and thriller films, including the Don’t Breathe duology and Evil Dead Rise, as well as its upcoming sequel.
Josh Cooley, on the other hand, is known for directing Toy Story 4 and Transformers One, with the former winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. He has also worked on many popular animations, including Inside Out, Up, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles.
The list goes on, but you get the gist. The names behind Roblox’s 99 Nights in the Forest movie adaptation are stacked, making this a potentially historic project for the gigantic gaming platform. It marks another successful branch out for the game, which recently also crossed over into Fortnite in its new season Override.
What is 99 Nights in the Forest on Roblox?
Roblox’s 99 Nights in the Forest is a survival game by Grandma’s Favourite Games, where players enter a dark and dangerous forest to rescue four missing children. However, unkillable monsters lurk during the night, including the notorious Deer, forcing players to return to the safety of their lit-up campfire.
Along the way, players can loot items around the map to obtain weapons, healing items, armour, and more, allowing them to gear up before venturing deeper into the expansive forest. Players need to rescue all four kids within 99 nights to obtain in-game rewards, and from then on can attempt to survive as long as they desire in the forest.
The game launched on 4 March 2025 and quickly grew to become one of the most-played games on Roblox. It peaked at 14.1 million concurrent players in October that year, although this came during an explosive period for the platform when several of its biggest games recorded staggering player numbers. These included Grow a Garden, which reached 22 million peak players, and Steal a Brainrot, which reached 28 million. Both games are also notably in the works as film adaptations.
99 Nights in the Forest remains one of the most popular games on the platform to this day, often reaching more than a million concurrent players during its biweekly updates. It has now amassed nearly 30 million visits and 9.5 million favourites on the platform.
