Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami named next D.I.C.E. Hall of Fame inductee

Thirty years after Resident Evil opened Spencer Mansion's doors, Mikami is headed into the D.I.C.E. Hall of Fame.

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences has announced that Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, will be honoured as the next inductee into the D.I.C.E. Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made on Wednesday (16 September) in a press release published on the official Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences website. Mikami will receive the Hall of Fame Award during the 30th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards on Thursday, 18 February 2027, in Las Vegas.

Goichi Suda, also known as SUDA51, the CEO and lead game designer of Grasshopper Manufacture, will present the award to his close friend and creative collaborator. The pair have previously worked together on games including Killer7 and Shadows of the Damned.

"It was from Mikami-san that I learned how to approach game development, both as a director and as a designer. Of all the many Padawans Mikami-san has mentored, I’m truly honoured that I was chosen to be his presenter for this induction into a kind of video game hall-of-fame," Suda said. "As one such Padawan, please allow me to celebrate my Obi-Wan Kenobi, Shinji Mikami, through this honorable award. I’m sure Mikami-san’s innumerable fans and industry comrades are just as delighted as I am to see him receive such an amazing award."

AIAS president Meggan Scavio also highlighted Mikami's influence on action games over his more than three decades in the industry.

"Shinji Mikami is a monumental and influential figure for both fans and developers alike," Scavio said. "He has continually demonstrated his originality and creative vision that resonates and inspires the action game genre. We are honored to be able to celebrate Mikami-san’s achievements and induct him into our Hall of Fame during our 30th anniversary of the D.I.C.E. Awards."

What are the achievements of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami?

Mikami joined Capcom in 1990, initially working on games based on Disney properties before being given the chance to create a new horror game for the original PlayStation. That project became Resident Evil in 1996, introducing players to the Spencer Mansion and helping popularise the survival horror genre.

Resident Evil went on to become one of Capcom's biggest franchises, while Mikami continued working across some of the publisher's most recognisable games. He directed Dino Crisis in 1999, returned to Resident Evil to direct its 2002 remake, and then took the series in a very different direction with Resident Evil 4 in 2005.

Resident Evil 4 replaced the series' fixed camera angles with an over-the-shoulder perspective and put far more emphasis on combat, changing not only Resident Evil but influencing the way plenty of third-person action games would handle their camera and shooting mechanics afterwards.

His work at and around Capcom stretched well beyond Resident Evil. Mikami was involved with Devil May Cry, Killer7, Viewtiful Joe, and Ace Attorney, while his directing credits also include the cult action game God Hand. After leaving Capcom, he directed PlatinumGames' 2010 sci-fi shooter Vanquish and worked with Suda on Shadows of the Damned.

Mikami then founded Tango Gameworks in 2010 and returned to survival horror as director of The Evil Within in 2014. Tango later developed The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi RUSH, with Mikami serving in leadership and producer roles as the studio expanded beyond the horror games for which he was best known.

One of Mikami's defining creations has since received its own place in gaming history. The original Resident Evil was inducted into The Strong National Museum of Play's World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2024, with the museum crediting Mikami's game with popularising survival horror and helping demonstrate the audience for more mature video games.

Mikami now serves as Creative Director and CEO of UNBOUND Inc. The Tokyo-based studio was fully acquired by Stellar Blade developer SHIFT UP in April 2026 and is currently working on original PC and console IPs for a global audience.

What is the D.I.C.E. Hall of Fame Award?

The D.I.C.E. Hall of Fame Award is one of several special honours presented by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. It recognises people who have helped create highly influential games or pushed a particular genre forward, with recipients typically including designers and creative directors, as well as producers, executives, and technologists.

The Hall of Fame is separate from AIAS' other special awards. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises long careers and industry leadership, the Pioneer Award honours work that helped shape a genre, technology, or development approach, while the Technical Impact Award focuses on innovations that have advanced interactive media.

Who are the other D.I.C.E. Hall of Fame inductees?

Mikami will join a long list of developers, studio leaders, composers, and other creators recognised by the Academy. Among the recent inductees named alongside him by AIAS are:

  • Evan Wells: The former Naughty Dog co-president helped guide the studio through generations of games including Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us.
  • Ted Price: The founder of Insomniac Games led the studio behind Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Marvel's Spider-Man.
  • Koji Kondo: The longtime Nintendo composer created some of gaming's most recognisable music across Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda and became the first game music composer inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame.
  • Tim Schafer: The Double Fine founder and game director is best known for adventure games including Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and Broken Age.
  • Ed Boon: The NetherRealm Studios creative chief co-created Mortal Kombat and has helped lead the fighting game series for more than three decades, alongside his work on Injustice.
  • Connie Booth: The longtime PlayStation executive helped bring games including Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Marvel's Spider-Man to PlayStation platforms while working closely with Sony's development studios.
  • Bonnie Ross: The former Microsoft executive founded 343 Industries and spent years overseeing Halo as the franchise expanded beyond its original Bungie-developed games.
  • Todd Howard: The Bethesda Game Studios director helped shape the studio's open-world RPG formula through The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, directing games including Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4.

Mikami will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 30th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards in Las Vegas on Thursday, 18 February 2027.
