Return to the battlefields of Sengoku-era Japan with Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition.
Creative Assembly, the developer behind the iconic Total War series of strategy games, surprised longtime fans of the franchise on Tuesday (15 September) with their sudden announcement of Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition.
Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition will serve as a lite remaster of the original, with this re-release including all DLC and a range of improvements to the base game. Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition is set to release on 13 October.
Creative Assembly accompanied the announcement with a new live-action trailer, though no gameplay has been shown yet. With that said, screenshots are shown on the Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition Steam page.
What is Total War: SHOGUN 2?
2011's SHOGUN 2 is one of the most beloved titles of the series, set in 16th century Japan during a period known as the ‘Sengoku Jidai’ or the Warring States period. In the game, players take control of one of the many ‘daimyō’ or regional warlords during the period and guide their chosen clan to establish their rule over Japan as the new Shogun.
While the base game for SHOGUN 2 focused on the Sengoku Jidai, the title also covered other periods of Japanese history through two major DLC expansions. The ‘Rise of the Samurai’ campaign is based on the Gempei War, which saw the rise of Japan's first Shogunate. The ‘Fall of the Samurai’ standalone expansion then covered the 19th century Boshin War, a civil war between forces loyal to the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate and the Imperial Court.
The game featured Total War's iconic blend of turn-based strategy with its campaign map and real-time strategy in the many battles players will fight in over the course of a campaign. In battle, players will take control of armies of ‘Ashigaru’ levy soldiers and elite ‘Samurai’ warriors.
What's new in Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition?
Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition will be an updated and improved version of the base game and all of the associated DLC, including both Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. The aforementioned improvements range from over 50 newly playable minor factions, improved visuals, modernised controls, integrated in-game mod support using Mod.io, modernised controls, to Japanese and Chinese voice acting and full text localisation.
Most importantly, Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition will be more compatible with modern machinery thanks to its 64bit upgrade as well as support for 1440p and 4K UI scaling.
What is the price for Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Complete Edition?
Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is priced at US$39.99 and will be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG on 13 October at 16:00 BST/08:00 PDT/23:00 CST/00:00 JST +1.
Players who already own the original game on Steam will automatically get a 75% launch discount for Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition for a limited time, starting on its launch date on 13 October until 12 November.
From 28 September, Total War: SHOGUN 2 will no longer be available to purchase as a standalone game on Steam. The Steam store page will remain live, but the game and its DLC will instead be included as part of Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition. Nothing will change for players that already own the base game, however. It will remain playable, and all current Steam owners will also be granted any DLC they do not already own for free.
