Hidetaka Miyazaki says FromSoftware is eager to make single-player games again

Working on The Duskbloods appears to have strengthened Miyazaki's appetite for another traditional FromSoftware experience.

FromSoftware fans waiting for the studio to return to single-player games may have something to look forward to after The Duskbloods. In an interview with IGN, president and director Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed what could come next for the studio following its recent run of multiplayer projects.

Elden Ring: Nightreign, directed by Junya Ishizaki, arrived in 2025 as a three-player co-op spin-off of Elden Ring, while The Duskbloods will bring up to eight players together in PvPvE matches on Nintendo Switch 2. However, Miyazaki suggested the two games should not be taken as a sign that FromSoftware is moving away from the single-player experiences it is known for.

Hidetaka Miyazaki wants to make another single-player game

According to Miyazaki, there was never a wider plan for Nightreign and The Duskbloods to arrive so close together as multiplayer games, with the two projects simply developing that way under different directors. "It's not necessarily some big reveal saying that this is the direction we plan to go moving forward. We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well," he said.

That focus is hardly unfamiliar territory for FromSoftware, which built much of its reputation on games including Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. More importantly, working on The Duskbloods appears to have strengthened Miyazaki's own appetite to make another single-player game. "..It's like, the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time, if anything, it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again," he added.

Why FromSoftware made The Duskbloods a multiplayer game

Miyazaki described The Duskbloods as an opportunity to explore ideas that "didn't really fit in the context of a single-player game". Those concepts had accumulated over time, giving Miyazaki somewhere to use ideas that had not worked within FromSoftware's usual single-player format. Miyazaki also discussed Nintendo's involvement in The Duskbloods, particularly when it comes to onboarding and tutorials. He acknowledged that FromSoftware has historically tended to drop players into its games and leave them to figure things out, while Nintendo has helped the studio convey that information more clearly.

Meanwhile, players got their first chance to try the game during The Duskbloods closed network test, which was scheduled across five sessions from 21 to 24 August. However, the first session was cancelled after players flooded the servers, leaving many stuck at the title screen. The remaining sessions went ahead over the weekend.

The Duskbloods still has no confirmed release date. A 24 September date briefly appeared online, but Nintendo denied that it was accurate. FromSoftware has previously confirmed that the game is due to launch in 2026.
