Players will soon be able to experience the first-generation Black Ops games on modern PlayStation platforms.
Treyarch has announced that its first two Call of Duty: Black Ops titles–Black Ops and Black Ops II–are finally being ported to PlayStation this July. The project is being developed in partnership with Iron Galaxy, the studio known for its work on numerous high-profile ports and remasters.
The Call of Duty developer also confirmed that both games will include all three core modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies.
What do we know about the Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 PlayStation ports?
Just days after a leadership shake-up at the studio, Treyarch dropped exciting news for Call of Duty fans eager to revisit the classic Black Ops titles on modern hardware.
Black Ops and Black Ops II will arrive on PlayStation next month, although the specific platforms have yet to be announced. It is widely expected that the games will be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, courtesy of the latter console's backward compatibility.
The original Black Ops launched in 2010 across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 3. Its sequel, Black Ops II, followed in 2012 and was also released on Sony's third-generation console.
For a long time, players have been limited to experiencing the original Black Ops games on the ageing PlayStation 3, which lacks backwards compatibility with newer consoles. This makes the modern port a long-awaited return for fans–its announcement raking in millions impressions on X alone.
Treyarch is collaborating with Iron Galaxy on the project. The independent studio is well known for its work on major ports and remasters, including The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us Part II, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2.
What modes will be included in the Call of Duty: Black Ops ports?
From the original titles, three core game modes will be included in the PlayStation ports: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies.
The original Campaign follows CIA operative Alex Mason during the Cold War, while the sequel continues his story across two timelines, further expanding the series’ narrative. Players can expect the classic Multiplayer experience, featuring nostalgic maps such as Nuketown, Firing Range, and Summit in the first instalment, and Raid, Standoff, and Hijacked in the second.
Meanwhile, Zombies delivers the series’ signature survival experience, challenging players to fend off relentless waves of the undead while upgrading weapons and their forte.
