The standalone sequel, Until Dawn 2, heads to a not-so-sunny adventure next year.
The packed 40-minute 2026 State of Play presentation offered plenty of new games for PlayStation fans to look forward to, including an iconic horror title in the works. Until Dawn is receiving a spiritual sequel in 2027, featuring new characters, new settings, and the familiar Butterfly Effect gameplay shaped by your decisions.
The two-minute announcement trailer offered a glimpse of the horrifying journey ahead, introducing players to a new island environment and an ambitious paranormal hunter crew.

It is worth noting that Supermassive Games, the developer of the original 2024 title, is not handling this follow-up game. Instead, development is being led by Firesprite, a Sony first-party studio.

What is Until Dawn 2 about?
In this standalone title, players follow a group of aspiring “ghost hunters” who, in a bid to go viral on social media, have staged their encounters. The group, who call themselves Dead True, finally get their big break–landing a deal with a major TV network to document paranormal activities on an abandoned tropical island. At first, everything seems like sunshine and excitement, but as their stay continues, they uncover vengeful horrors centuries old.
As you may expect, this spin-off features the player-driven decision-making which can significantly alter the outcome of the game.
“Would it even be an Until Dawn game without gut-wrenching decisions? Will you risk injury to save a cute baby boar from a gnarly bear trap? Keep a scandalous affair going, even if it could blow up the group? Push someone to their breaking point, all for the sake of content your intimidating boss says you need to deliver?” Firesprite teased possible choices in the PlayStation blog.
The developer also highlighted that in Until Dawn 2, managing relationships between colleagues will be an important aspect of the game, as it can trigger the Butterfly Effect and shift the story into different–and potentially worse–directions.
While the story setup has been revealed, deeper details regarding gameplay and character lineup have yet to be shown–promised to arrive in the coming months. The announcement trailer did confirm the return of Dr Hill, who is shown toward the end of the trailer, but otherwise the cast remains largely a mystery.
Until Dawn 2 is scheduled to release in 2027 exclusively for PlayStation 5.
