Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe reportedly set during Germany’s witch trials, Ezio rumoured to return

Will Ezio truly return in Assassin's Creed: Codename Hexe?

Ubisoft’s mysterious next mainline Assassin’s Creed game is back in the spotlight, after a fresh wave of alleged leaks gave players a clearer look at what Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe could actually be. From a possible new protagonist tied to the Auditore bloodline, to reported Ezio dialogue and a setting centred around the Würzburg witch trials, the rumours have quickly taken over the Assassin’s Creed community.

The details stem from a Reddit thread compiling claims from known Ubisoft leakers Rogue and j0nathan, with fans already debating whether Hexe could become one of the franchise’s darkest entries yet.

Ubisoft previously described the game as a “darker” Assassin’s Creed experience set during a “pivotal moment in history,” but the publisher has not confirmed any of the newly-leaked details.

Is Assassin’s Creed Hexe set during the Würzburg witch trials?

According to the Reddit post, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe is reportedly set primarily in Würzburg, Germany, although players may be able to explore additional locations as well. The setting immediately caught attention online due to the real-world Würzburg witch trials that took place during the 17th century.

Many fans had initially assumed Hexe would tackle the Salem witch trials instead, making the reported German setting a surprise for parts of the community. On X, user @AeronSoda wrote, “I thought it was gonna be Salem Witch Trials. IT’S THE GERMAN WÜRZBURG WITCH TRIALS!”

Others appeared far more enthusiastic about the alleged direction. X user @TheHiddenOneAC said, “Würzburg is the best possible outcome I had hoped for AC Hexe.”

The leaks also suggest the game will heavily lean into darker themes and paranoia. Reported NPC voice lines include, “Form a circle, do not let her vanish”, “They say the forest moves at night” and “Check the shadows! She can’t have gone far”. Alongside that, the Reddit post claims Hexe will feature “lots of forests,” with an unlockable “tree-to-tree branch jumping” ability, ritual sites to investigate, and missions involving stolen relics.

Who is the protagonist of  Assassin’s Creed Hexe?

The alleged protagonist is reportedly named Anika, with the name Elsa said to have only been a placeholder during development. According to the Reddit thread, the character is also supposedly “a descendant of Claudia Auditore”.

The leaks include several pieces of alleged dialogue tied to the protagonist, including: “They call me a witch. They want to burn me for what I can do. For what I know.” Additional reported gameplay and story details from the thread include blood pacts, poison-focused mechanics, and a character named Wolfgang appearing in the main story. The leaks also claim NPCs will react more aggressively to suspicious behaviour, reportedly “immediately” calling out minor suspicious activities.

Is Ezio returning in Assassin’s Creed Hexe?

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the leaks is the possible return of Ezio Auditore. According to the Reddit thread, Hexe may feature Ezio either physically, through flashbacks, or as some kind of Isu-related projection or memory. Several alleged lines attributed to the character were shared in the post, including: “Come. Leap with me. One last time for an old man.”

Another reported line states: “They always fear what they cannot control. They called us demons once, too. But remember, Elsa: 'Nulla è reale, tutto è lecito.” The thread also claims Anika says: “That white hood, it’s like the one in my mother’s drawings”, followed by Ezio saying, “She wanted you to have a life”.

While fans are already dissecting the references and possible lore implications, Ubisoft has not publicly commented on the leaks. For now, Assassin’s Creed Hexe remains one of the publisher’s most secretive upcoming projects, leaving players to piece together what might be real and what could still change before release.
