Assassin’s Creed 1 remake reportedly in development, as Black Flag Resynced nears release

Some speculate that the next remake may target the Assassin's Creed 20th anniversary, which will be in 2027.

Ubisoft’s push into remakes is gathering pace, with fresh reports suggesting that the franchise could soon revisit where it all began, this time pointing to the OG Assassin's Creed title. The rumours started showing up soon after the official reveal of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, which is set to release in July 2026.

Is an Assassin’s Creed 1 remake happening?

A remake of the original Assassin’s Creed is reportedly in development, backed by multiple industry sources. X user j0nathan, described as a well-known and often accurate Ubisoft leaker, has supported earlier reporting from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson that the next title in Ubisoft’s remake catalogue will focus on the very first game in the series.

According to j0nathan, the project has been in the works for years, with the last update on its development dating back to 2023. While Ubisoft has not officially confirmed the remake, the overlap between both sources adds weight to the claim.

Ubisoft itself previously outlined in 2024 that it intends to pursue “multiple remakes” across the Assassin’s Creed franchise, though it stopped short of naming specific titles beyond the widely-rumoured Black Flag project.

When could an Assassin’s Creed 1 remake come out?

There is no official release date for the reported remake, and Ubisoft has yet to formally reveal the project. However, timing speculation points towards a meaningful milestone for the series.

November 2027 marks the 20th anniversary of the original Assassin’s Creed, making it a likely window for a potential launch. Such timing would also place roughly 16 months between Black Flag Resynced and a follow-up remake, aligning with a staggered release strategy.

First released on 13 November, 2007, Assassin’s Creed is widely regarded as the foundation of the franchise. It introduced the Assassin-Templar conflict, and established the core stealth-action gameplay loop that would define future entries.

Despite its legacy, and a Metacritic score of 81, the original game remains the only mainline title in the series that is not currently playable on modern consoles. A remake would bring it in line with other HD-era releases and potentially integrate it into Ubisoft’s planned Assassin’s Creed hub experience.

The reported remake also fits into Ubisoft’s wider roadmap. Alongside Black Flag Resynced, the publisher is still expected to release the long-in-development Assassin’s Creed Hexe, a project that remains largely under wraps.

If accurate, the existence of an Assassin’s Creed 1 remake signals a broader strategy: revisiting key entries in the series while maintaining a steady pipeline of new and returning experiences.

And before any potential return to Altair’s story, Ubisoft is set to launch Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the first confirmed remake in the series. The game is set to launch as early as 9 July, marking Ubisoft’s first major step in revisiting its back catalogue.
