Roblox faces potential ban in Philippines over child safety issues

Roblox has been given 30 days to address safety concerns or face a potential nationwide ban in the Philippines

Popular online game platform Roblox is facing the threat of a nationwide ban in the Philippines, as regulators move to address alleged illegal activities and risks involving minors.

Has Roblox been banned in the Philippines?

According to a report by GMA News Online, The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) announced on Friday that it has given Roblox a 30-day deadline to respond to concerns about threat actors operating on the platform. Authorities claim that individuals involved in child exploitation and drug-related activities have been using the game as a “hunting grounds” for underage users.

Officials from the CICC and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) stated that failure to coordinate with the government within the given timeframe could lead to a full block across the country. The block would involve directing internet service providers and telecommunications firms to restrict access to Roblox servers, as well as removing the app from the Play Store and App Store.

Why would Roblox get banned in the Philippines?

The issue has also reached the legislative level, with Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros calling for a Senate probe into Roblox and similar platforms. Through Senate Resolution No. 357, Hontiveros has urged the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality to investigate how online games handle child safety. The resolution seeks to introduce mandatory age verification protocols, and stronger protection standards for platforms operating in the Philippines.

She cited reports from law enforcement that offenders are able to contact minors through online gaming spaces, often without reliable mechanisms to verify age or identity. Hontiveros also called for improved digital literacy and responsible gaming education, alongside measures to address the mental health effects of excessive gaming.

She warned that “the Philippines continues to face a persistent and evolving threat of online sexual abuse and exploitation of children,” with digital platforms increasingly used for grooming and coercion. At the same time, she stressed that regulation should focus on risk-based safety measures rather than outright bans, balancing child protection with innovation and user privacy.

The Philippines’ potential action comes amid growing global pressure on Roblox and its moderation systems. The platform, which has tens of millions of active users worldwide, many of them children, has long faced questions over its ability to safeguard younger audiences.

Concerns escalated in October 2024 following a report from Hindenburg Research, which accused the company of failing to protect minors from harmful or exploitative content. Since then, Roblox has faced multiple legal challenges.

In 2025, Louisiana’s attorney general filed a lawsuit alleging that the platform was “overrun with harmful content and child predators,” followed by a similar case in San Francisco. Both lawsuits claim that insufficient moderation has allowed bad actors to exploit users.

Several countries have also imposed restrictions. China has blocked Roblox, while Jordan and Turkey cited explicit and inappropriate content in their bans. Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait have also restricted the platform, with Kuwait’s Ministry of Information requesting a block after public complaints. Guatemala has introduced restrictions citing risks to minors.

In response to mounting criticism worldwide, Roblox has expanded its safety efforts, investing in AI-driven moderation tools and improved communication safeguards. The platform has also introduced age-based chat restrictions and mandatory age verification checks as part of its latest updates in 2026. These measures are aimed at strengthening user protection and addressing ongoing concerns from regulators and parents.

With a 30-day deadline now in place, Roblox’s response will determine whether the platform remains accessible in the Philippines.
