Fatal Frame, sometimes known as Project Zero, is a classic early-2000s horror franchise that originally debuted on PlayStation 2. While the series never achieved massive commercial success, its second installment, Crimson Butterfly, has been widely praised as one of the scariest games of all time–an experience that the 2026 remake promises to reimagine with modern visuals and enhanced gameplay.

For those new to the series, the game follows a pair of twin sisters who become lost in an abandoned village haunted by hostile spirits. Players must combat these ghosts using the Camera Obscura, a camera device that captures and seals spirits–a signature mechanic of the franchise.

The remake brings a complete overhaul, including rebuilt visuals, 3D audio, refined gameplay, and modernised controls. Graphics are realism-focused, with improved character textures and enhanced environmental effects such as lighting and shadows. New content has been added, including additional side stories and newly-constructed areas. The Camera Obscura remains central to gameplay, with added depth through new features like Zoom and Filter Switching.
