Divinity will feature several staple gameplay features returning from Baldur’s Gate 3.
Larian has revealed more details from its upcoming fantasy-RPG Divinity, following the game’s big reveal at The Game Awards 2025. The game has been the subject of intense speculation over the weekend, but studio head Swen Vincke is finally ready to clear things up.
According to Vincke, the game will feature a turn-based combat system with multiplayer elements, much like Baldur’s Gate 3. However, it will no longer be tied to the latter RPG’s Dungeons & Dragons mechanics.
Divinity is a turn-based RPG, will depart from the Dungeons & Dragons system
If you’re worried about Larian leaving behind the turn-based RPG format it has become known for, worry no more. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, studio head Swen Vincke noted that its next title Divinity will have a few things in common with Baldur’s Gate 3 and its other previous releases:
“This is going to be us unleashed, I think. It’s a turn-based RPG featuring everything you’ve seen from us in the past, but it’s brought to the next level.”
Vincke also noted that Divinity is planned to have an early access release much like Baldur’s Gate 3, though it likely won’t happen in 2026. He continued: “Baldur’s Gate 3 was a good game and I’m proud of it, but I think this one is going to be way better.”
Part of this comes down to the studio not being restricted by Dungeons & Dragons RPG systems. “Here, we’re making a system that’s made for a video game. It’s much easier to understand.” Larian also owns the Divinity IP and has shifted to a new game engine, marking a big change for the way this upcoming title is being developed.
Vincke ended the interview by telling Bloomberg: “We’re doing a couple of things that you haven’t seen in RPGs before, I think.” In another interview with IGN, Larian also confirmed that Divinity is a single-player game with co-op multiplayer, and is set to be bigger than Baldur’s Gate 3.
Divinity does not have a release date yet.
