Divinity Original Sin 2 gets upgraded for current-gen consoles ahead of Larian’s new Divinity game

Revisiting Rivellon can help players prepare and notice details that connect to the new Divinity.

More than a year after being rated for newer hardware, and just days after Larian Studios pulled the curtain back on its next big RPG, Divinity: Original Sin 2 has landed on current gen consoles. The Definitive Edition is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, opening the gates of Rivellon to a whole new wave of players.

The release comes hot on the heels of Larian’s Divinity reveal at The Game Awards 2025. With Baldur’s Gate 3 turning the studio into one of the most talked-about names in RPGs, confirmation that the team is returning to its original fantasy universe, Divinity, has sparked renewed interest in the series. Now, the game is being ported over to modern hardware.

According to Larian’s website, the game's current-gen version is available right now, with support extending to Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Players who already own the game on PS4, Xbox One, or the original Nintendo Switch can upgrade at no extra cost. The only regional exception is Japan, where the upgrade on PS5 and Switch 2 costs ¥100.

Returning to Rivellon will have subtle ties to what’s coming next

With a brand new Divinity game officially on the way, Larian has also addressed how much homework players need to do before diving into what comes next. The studio has been clear that the upcoming Divinity stands on its own, but longtime fans may notice a few familiar threads.

“Divinity will offer a completely new story, but there’s some continuity and characters for those who’ve played previous games. You might even pick up on certain things others may not!”

That said, Divinity: Original Sin 2 itself is still designed as a standalone experience. In the accompanying FAQ, Larian confirms that players do not need to have played earlier entries to understand the story, though Divinity: Original Sin is still recommended for those who want the full series experience.

While the announcement does not break down technical changes in detail, this release is framed as a modern console version of the Definitive Edition rather than a full overhaul. The Nintendo eShop description states, “The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 has a higher resolution and provides a smoother experience with increased framerate.” No additional features or content changes have been outlined.

“It’s not a remake or a remaster; this is your way to experience the classic DOS:2 on the current generation of consoles!”

For newcomers, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is set in a world where the gods are dead and forbidden magic has pushed its wielders into exile. Players begin their journey in the prison colony of Fort Joy, hunted by the Magisters of the Divine Order while uncovering secrets that threaten everyone. The game supports solo play, online multiplayer, and couch co-op, making it just as playable alone as it is with friends.

Larian also confirms that Divinity: Original Sin 2 uses its own class-less character building and combat system, separate from Baldur’s Gate 3. Players can customise stats, skills, talents, and abilities freely, or opt for preset classes when starting out.

The studio has also noted that while the newly-announced Divinity stands on its own, returning to earlier games may make certain characters or details easier to recognise once that next entry arrives.
