Game director Casey Hudson confirms Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic will launch before 2030

Star Wars fans are still unpacking one of The Game Awards’ biggest reveals, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, but discussion around the game has already turned to how long players will be waiting. According to Arcanaut Studios co-founder Casey Hudson, the answer is not nearly as long as some recent speculation suggests.

As reported by Windows Central, Hudson took to social media following growing doubts over the project’s release window. Those doubts were sparked by comments from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who questioned whether a 2030 launch estimate was realistic, given how recently Arcanaut Studios was formed.

On Bluesky on December 12, Schreier wrote: “Last night’s biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed KotOR (and Anthem). Exciting news for lots of people… but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an optimistic guess. Maybe it’ll be a PlayStation 7 game.”

The comment quickly circulated online, especially among fans who were excited to see Hudson returning to a Knights of the Old Republic-style project.

Later that same day, Hudson responded directly on Twitter, pushing back against the idea that the game was a decade away. “Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030’ rumors,” Hudson wrote. “Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”

Hudson addresses concerns over development timeline

Hudson’s response suggests a development cycle of around four to five years for Fate of the Old Republic. That’s ambitious for a project of this scale, especially with Arcanaut Studios only just getting started. Lucasfilm has confirmed the studio was founded this year, which explains why talk of a 2030 or later release quickly picked up after the reveal.

Some context: Hudson’s previous studio, Humanoid Origin, closed in November 2024, and his LinkedIn shows him taking on the founder and CEO role at Arcanaut Studios in July 2025. While the studio is new on paper, early concepts or pre-production work on Fate of the Old Republic may have started before Arcanaut was formally incorporated.

For players, the excitement isn’t just about dates. Fate of the Old Republic brings Hudson back to the corner of the Star Wars universe tied to Knights of the Old Republic, a name that still carries weight with RPG fans more than 20 years later.

Arcanaut Studios is aiming for a release well ahead of 2030, with Hudson pushing back against suggestions that the game is tied to a decade-long wait. Whether or not the developer makes that happen remains to be seen.
