The Nintendo Switch 2 is now the company's fastest-selling console ever.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is off to a strong start, with Nintendo confirming that a record-breaking 3.5 million units have been sold worldwide in just four days. The announcement was made on the official Nintendo website. Launching on 5 June, the system has already become the fastest-selling piece of Nintendo hardware in the company’s history.
The Kyoto-based gaming giant announced the sales figures earlier today, noting that no previous Nintendo console has reached the same global sales volume within its initial four-day window. The successful debut signals strong demand for the successor to the original Nintendo Switch, which first launched in 2017.
It’s no surprise the console is off to a fast start, given the sustained interest leading up to launch. Speculation around a successor to the original Switch began as early as 2024, with rumours, leaks, and even mock-ups fuelling the conversation surrounding new Nintendo hardware. Even after Nintendo’s official announcement in April, excitement continued to grow as new features and design details were revealed, along with an alleged early unboxing video.
The Nintendo Switch 2 brings notable hardware and feature upgrades
The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces several hardware and software improvements. These include a larger, more responsive screen, upgraded graphics and processing capabilities, and a redesigned set of magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers.
A key addition is GameChat, which enables players to voice or video chat and share gameplay screens with friends online at the press of a dedicated C Button on the Joy-Con 2. This marks a shift towards more socially-connected features in Nintendo’s ecosystem.

Nintendo offers launch bundles and confirms free game upgrades
One of the main launch offerings is the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Set, which includes the system and a digital copy of Mario Kart World, a title exclusive to the new console. The bundle is priced at US$500. That gives the user up to US$30 of savings for the new Mario Kart game, which would cost US$80 as a standalone purchase. The Nintendo Switch 2 costs US$450, by comparison.
Nintendo has also confirmed that many existing games will receive free upgrades for the Switch 2. These include Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Mario Odyssey, and more. Further details on the Nintendo Switch 2 and its upcoming titles are available on the official Nintendo website.
