Some players however, continue to experience problems.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls didn’t exactly have the launch weekend it was hoping for, with PC performance complaints piling up alongside PlayStation 5 and PC crossplay issues affecting players on both platforms.
A couple of days after acknowledging the issues on social media and the game’s official Discord channel, Arc System Works has finally rolled out an emergency patch for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, following its troubled launch day and opening weekend. The patch was rolled out on Monday (10 August) at 11.00 PM SGT/12.00 AM JST/8.00 AM PST, with the game going offline for maintenance for about an hour.
The emergency patch was released to address multiple complaints about PC performance issues causing stutters and crashes, along with multiple bugs affecting the overall player experience.
Before this, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls had fallen from a Mixed rating on Steam to Mostly Negative, with only 38% of user reviews positive at one point. The PC performance issues got so bad that even one of the FGC’s biggest names, Maximilian “Maximilian Dood” Christiansen, uninstalled the game on livestream.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls emergency patch notes include CPU and performance fixes
On the game’s official Discord, the devs posted the patch notes detailing the changes and fixes made during maintenance.
“We’ve been working on a number of fixes and improvements aimed at reducing performance issues, improving stability, and addressing some specific problems,” the developers said.
The patch includes several PC-specific fixes aimed at reducing overall CPU usage. These address high CPU usage throughout the start-up process, as well as additional system load caused by periodic audio processing during matches. The developers also identified unnecessary checks for available audio inputs as one of the causes of sudden frame and performance drops. “These unnecessary checks could cause sudden frame drops and performance drops. This has now been addressed,” the patch notes said.
Other changes and fixes include:
- Frame rate drops at certain resolutions have been fixed.
- Battle Settings should no longer revert to default after restarting the game with certain customisation items or colours enabled.
- An Online Lobby issue that caused some buttons to become unresponsive during mini-games when attack buttons were displayed as action icons has been fixed.
- Auto graphics quality detection has been improved to select a graphics profile that better fits the player’s system.
PC players will also be prompted to warm up their shaders again after updating the game. “With the game being updated to the latest version, the PC version will prompt you to warm-up the shaders. Do so now for a smoother experience,” the developers said.
The team added that the fixes are part of its “ongoing work to improve performance, stability, and the overall experience.”
Did the patch fix Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls PC issues?
Reports have been inconsistent. On Reddit, many players have reported that the issue has been fixed. “It fixed the stuttering for me!” Reddit user CattensForSale said, with many others reporting similar results and sharing that the game now runs smoothly and CPU usage has been significantly reduced.
Some players on Steam have also changed their rating to “Recommended” after the patch rolled out. “If you're seeing negative reviews and wondering why, It launched in a near unplayable bad state,” Steam user Rayden Belmont said. The Steam user said the game remained in that state for several days, but the 10GB patch released on 10 August fixed the performance issues for them. They consequently changed their vote back to Recommended, calling Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls “one of the best fighting games we've had.”
However, it seems like the patch did not address everyone’s issues overall, even if there were some improvements. Reddit user IDramos reported lower CPU usage and fewer instances of lag during matches following the patch. “That said, the GPU demand is still unnecessarily high,” they said, noting that their NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 can run Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 without the same problem.
After three or four matches, however, IDramos said Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls still crashes with an “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource” error. “It's a start - but more work needs to be done,” they concluded.
Reddit user wwl said their own game had been running fine before the update, but a friend who had been experiencing much worse performance still encountered problems after installing the patch. “He tried the patch and still gets 50 fps,” wwl said.
Reddit user MK8Sins also saw improvements after using auto-config for the graphics settings and running the shader warm-up, but said performance was still “not good enough for an online Fighting Game.”
Some players on official Discord’s “bug-report” channel have continued to share complaints about their PC performance as well, with other players pitching in with troubleshooting fixes. However, some still cannot seem to find a fix, with their game crashing in the middle of matches or even during training mode.
Does Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls run on Steam Deck after the patch?
Unfortunately, the patch didn’t focus on adding compatibility with Linux. This means that the game is still not compatible with SteamOS and, consequently, the Steam Deck.
