ESL One Summer 2021 kicked off this past Wednesday with a fair mix of teams that have already qualified for The International 10 and some that will be looking to make a final push at the end of the month through the regional qualifiers.

With the tournament being held just after the final major of the Dota Pro Circuit and about two weeks before the big TI10 qualifier battle, ESL One Summer 2021 is set to be a dress rehearsal, especially for those who haven’t made it to any of the majors this year. First day has already delivered the upsets, with both Vikin.gg and Tundra Esports, two teams that didn’t make a LAN appearance since their formation, taking down far more experienced competitors.

Vikin.gg sent Team Nigma to the lower bracket with a clean 2-0 victory, while Tundra scored the same against Team Liquid. However, the latter was playing this tourney without Michael "miCKe" Vu, who is taking a short break before the TI10 qualifiers.

Liquid played their opening series with Aydin "iNSaNiA" Sarkohi doing his best to carry the team and with Milan "MiLAN" Kozomara standing in. But, despite a valiant effort from iNSaNiA on Chaos Knight in game one and a Leshrac played via offlane in game two, Liquid still got bested.

In the elimination series, iNSaNiA switched back to his support five position and Ilya "Illidan" Pivcaev stood in for the team in the carry role.

Their adversaries were OG, who are also looking to fine tune their strategies now that they welcomed back Syed "SumaiL" Hassan and did not hold back from doing everything in their power to stay alive in the tournament.

OG were forced to adapt their draft to a Broodmother, Oracle opening from Liquid and they kept themselves safe from being rushed with a Winter Wyvern capable of getting rid of the Spiderlings fairly easily and an offlane Timbersaw able to chase the Brood in the Engagements.

With one match away from getting eliminated, Liquid looked to assert dominance with a Slardar-Io duo and with a carry Leshrac and mid lane Razor dishing out the damage, but they were playing into a Templar Assassin pick from OG and overall tanky line-up capable to survive though burst damage.

Along with Liquid, Team Secret have also exited the event earlier than most would have anticipated, somewhat in the same fashion they did at the AniMajor. Alliance had their number in the upper bracket opening series, taking them down 2-0, while Team Nigma delivered the final blow on them in the lower bracket.

In the battle for survival, Team Secret started things off with a dominant Void Spirit performance from Michał "Nisha" Jankowski, which set them on the right course.

However, Nigma bounced back and reverse swept the series with strong team fight in game two and a perfect Terrorblade in the second game. In game three Igor "iLTW" Filatov gave it a try to the carry Axe that was Nigma’s undoing at the Major and crushed Secret with it.

ESL One Summer 2021 elimination series continue with Vikin.gg and Team Unique going up against each other and AS Monaco Gambit fighting for survival against Tundra Esports. The losing sides will be joining Team Secret and Team Liquid in the 9th-12th place finish in the tournament.
