There will be no majors until 2017, Valve confirms

Valve has confirmed that the next Valve-sponsored major will not happen this year - it is expected January 2017.

The recent update breaks the trend of the past two years, both of which had three majors. Valve’s customary major selection process vets proposals from various tournament organizers around the world, which for the most part have been ESL and DreamHack, and most recently, MLG. DreamHack will not host a major tournament this year, but they are expected to be favored in the selection process for 2017’s first major.

There is no clear reason why Valve chose not to sponsor any of the large upcoming tournaments this fall and winter - the StarLadder i-League Season 2 finals in China, ESL One New York, IEM Oakland, ESWC 2016, or DreamHack Winter 2016.

There is some speculation that MLG is pouring lots of resources into hosting another major and will have a strong proposal for Valve following this tweet:
