First Round of Gosucup - Battle Report

The first round of Gosucup is over, here's a quick recap of what happened in the final match between LRM)hanniGan (P) and BW-KenZy (Z)

Game 1- Chupung-Ryeong 1.2

Hannigan (P) at the top, Kenzy (Z) at the bottom. Straight up Zerg and Protoss exchange some suavities, Zerg gets a pylon on his natural, and goes straight to Hydras, but manages to steal opponent’s gas. Protoss opens up with Corsair/Temlrar/DT, followed by a natural expo. About 10 minutes in Zerg attempts to harass that same HanniGan’s natural with a few Lurks and lings, - partially successful but gets clean up pretty easy with a few storms. KenZy manages to prevent Protoss from building an expo on 10’ with a bunch of lings, and attempts a somewhat significant 6-over drop at Protoss base. Drop goes nowhere, a few moments later HanniGan pushes out and the magic “GG” appears on the screen, 1-0 HanniGan.

Game 2 – Destination 1.1

Once again, Protoss is at the top, Zerg - at the bottom. Pretty standard opening, HanniGan goes fast expo, Kenzy answers with natural and a 3rd expo right away. Zerg actually manages to sneak a single Lurk behind Protoss natural and does a good bit of damage with it, forcing his opponent to do the old Archon – Zealot trick that proved unsuccessful. About 10 minutes in Zerg takes the mineral-only expo and starts to pull more troops to support the contain, set in front of HanniGan’s natural. Protoss tries to push out twice, first via back , next through main bridges, but both times gets squashed by Zerg’s Mutas and Hydras. 22 minutes in, Protoss makes his final attempt to push out, but simply gets overpowered by Zerg who by that time took pretty much all the expos on the map and was pushing 180 supply. “GG” pops up, the series is tied at 1-1.

Game 3 – Othello 1.1

Pretty Quick game, Protoss on 1’, Zerg on 10’. Protoss goes for an early timing push with five zealots a goone, one reaver and a shuttle. Few moments later Reaver is gone but so is most of the Zerg army. HanniGan simply keeps sending Zealots to Zerg’s natural, does a very scary two-Reaver drop at Zerg’s main and precisely at 8:28 another “GG” pops up, 2-1 HannIGan.

Game 4 – Andromeda.

Very Econ-oriented opening, Kenzy at bottom right goes for 2 expos, HanniGan at bottom left takes his natural. No real action until about 12 minutes in, except for a few corsairs taking down some Overlords. Zergs starts shifting some serious Hydra army around the map, mets HanniGan’s timing push, and…gets wiped by great storms. 3-1 LRM)hanniGan takes it almost in a jiffy.

HanniGan was nice enough to stick around for a quick interview:

First of all congratulations on your success today, if you don’t mind we’d like to take a quick interview. Who would you say was your most difficult opponent, going through the Tour?

I’d have to say… “Push”, cause I haven’t been that good vs. Protoss lately, but I am working on it.

What was your most memorable game of 2009?

That’s easy! WCG Ukraine 2009, lots of fun, easily the highlight of the year so far.

Playing vs. different races some progamers tend to vary not only strategies but also playing style, do you practice that?

Nah, I just face whoever comes up to take the beating, no special adjustments.

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve Gosucup?

Not really, it wouldn’t hurt if you added Blue Storm or Neo Medusa in the map pool though.

That should just about conclude our Battle Report. Congratulations, again, to our winner – LRM)hanniGan, the first player to make it into Gosucup Grand Finals. If you’d like to sign up for the nest Gosucup event, - follow the link at the bottom.
