MSL: Round of 16 over, here comes round of 8

gommsl_logo.jpg

The last week of the MSL group of 16 stage. The winners here today would make it to the next stage. Also an interesting preview of what could be the ace game on sunday between CJ and MBC when Savior takes on Pusan. Here are the battle reports.

Savior vs Pusan at Reverse Temple

f107c571af433bdca25026f314015a2f5ea42426cc66a0a03abf48069bd80ae8da2a8187bf18451f478e82743ea8a99ad2a8e1283a613a43d2b6Pusan warped in at 3 and started with a pylon-nexus build before blocking his entrance with a gateway and forge. Savior spawned at 9 and went for a 12hatch in his natural before taking his mineral only as well. Pusan had placed his cannon too far away from his gateway and Savior is able to take it down with some lings before adding a fourth hatchery and building a den. Pusan adds a starport and techs for reavers. Zerg takes the natural at 6 and adds a spire to deal with the corsairs. He also places a lurker outside the protoss natural to take out the forge. Pusan attacks the zerg mineral only with reaver/corsair, but due to hydra and scourge he has to withdraw quickly.

Savior takes the main at 6 and Pusan DT drops the zerg main. Unfortunately for him Savior has burrow and he doesn't get as many drone kills as he should have gotten. Pusan has added a lot of gateways and supported by reavers he takes his mineral only. He also tries to head for the mineral only of zerg, but hydras counter his newly made nexus and he has to withdraw to save it. When he does move out he gets flanked by Savior. Although he wins the battle zerg reinforces more quickly and forces him to withdraw without hurting the zerg economy much.

Pusan drops the main at 6 with some zealots and does a little bit of damage before he takes the natural at 12 and tries to move out again. Savior holds the attack and drops the newly build nexus at 12 natural at the same time. Pusan is force to realize he's beaten. GG

Silver vs Much at Blitz X

Then he builds a cannon in behind the zergs natural. Silver on his part went with a 9pool and then places his hatchery in the natural, but away from the cannon. Protoss simply adds another cannon a bit closer and forces it to be cancelled. Instead Silver double hatches in his side of the middle and sends his lings to the protoss base. He even manages to get a few of them inside to harass and get a closer look. Much actually adds two gateways in the zerg natural and starts harassing with zealots. When he finally makes his move from the base in the middle zerg comes up behind him.

Zerg loses a lot of lings, but Much is not left with too many zealots either. Silver decides to tech for hydras and with those he destroys the pesky buildings in his natural. Much counters in the middle, but not much damage at all. As Silver's hydra count begins to rise, Much tries to delay their arrival at his natural. He's warping in cannons, but Silver makes it in time and stomps him into submission. GG

Bisu vs Canata at Longinus II

45124147b38ebec2b82a211b0e4d41a0a2f4017e0fdf515bd289319ba32cf4738d976ba0f3e046a111f4e86aa6b5fffb285e552a91dad243177bBisu warps in at 3 and opens with a pylon into a nexus. Then he adds a gateway-core-gateway. Canata lands at 7 and goes with a wall and a factory before taking his natural. Protoss takes the base at 12 and blocks the entrance with pylons and dual forge. Canata seems happy to macro in his base as he adds three more factories and a startport before he puts down another CC at his mineral only. Canata gets a dropship and almost drops four vults at 12, but is scared off by two warping cannons. He returns later with two tanks and ferries the four vults in as well. It's quickly dealt with by some zealots though.

Terran has been slowly pushing for control of the high ground and now he's got it. He pushes for Bisu's newly established mineral only, but his line of units gets flanked with arbiters and destroyed. Canata takes 5 and plays dropship games with the protoss expansions while he tries to regain control of the higher ground. Bisu controls it nicely though. He also makes sure the expansion at 5 doesn't mine for too long and that Canata cannot establish 9. In effect he is starving him until he has the units to recall 5 and then the terran main. Canata has to give up. There were also some nice stasis use in this game, not counting when Bisu blocked himself out from the terran expo at 5. GG

Free vs XellOs at Desert Fox

53001bf05636a76e802986d4936ea6b46a2ff491c016b0c57585acb59a4e047947d225c29cfecde11319868a6d38a8a72c0ea8a7a71b62e38ae7Free warps in at 11 and opens with a gate core build followed by a tech towards reavers. Xellos lands at 7 and opts for a barrack before building his command center. He lifts the barrack over the neutral buildings to take out the sunken first. The he goes two factories and a starport. Free is quite a bit later with his exp than Xellos is. He attacks with his reaver and does actually do some damage to the scvs in Xellos' base. A wraith snipes the shuttle though and kills the helpless reaver. When Xellos shortly after snipes the second shuttle as well, things are starting to look up for the terran.

This game had so many drops back and forth, so lets just talk about it in broad terms. Xellos seemed to constantly be a base ahead of free in mid game, but free also tended to halt mining at the terran bases with a single shuttle. As the game developed they traded bases back and forth and Free had about one high templar for every zealot. He stormed Xellos at every occasion. Xellos kept his economy running though and slightly abused the map in his favor. In the end all of Free's insane storming wasn't enough and he had to type out. GG

Some very interesting games today. The winners here advance to the round of 8. There they will face the previously qualified players in: Hwasin, Justin (aka Bifrost) Nal_rA, and Light. In preparation for the ProLeague season 2 final on sunday, it's good to see so many MBC HERO and CJ Entus players in action. Savior, XellOs and Much are all CJ players, while Bisu and Pusan are from MBC HERO.
