ICYMI: The Korean Danawa Overwatch Battles

Some of the best Korean Overwatch teams took part in an experimental, 8 round tournament. While the format may have been a little wacky, the results were some very entertaining Overwatch matches.

The Danawa Overwatch Battle wrapped up earlier today after 8 rounds of intense competition. The all Korean tournament featured ?1,000,000 ($886) for the winner of each round and ?2,000,000 ($1772) for the winner of the season final. The tournament had an unusual format, with the winner of each round moving on to face an opponent chosen by the tournament organizers. The final was made up of two teams chosen by a community vote.

Despite the wacky tournament structure, we were treated to some high quality Overwatch matches. The 12th overall ranked team in the world, Lunatic-Hai, was pushed to its limit in a five game series against up-and-comers Mighty AOD.  We saw Might AOD once again in the season final, taking on OPPA.DANAWA, another strong team best known by Western fans for their run in GosuGamers’ NA weekly #20. The series did not disappoint, going back and forth before Mighty AOD finally took the series win with a score of 3-1.

With every tournament that Korean teams take part in, they seem to get better and better at Overwatch. This tournament had no shortage of exciting matches even though it was relatively minor, especially compared to the Apex Season 1, which includes many of the same teams. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Korean Overwatch.
