GTA VI's ESRB rating confirms sex scenes, violence, drugs, and alcohol, surprising no one

Rockstar Games’ big GTA sequel is going to be M for Mature.

This may come to the surprise of no one, but GTA VI has officially been rated M for Mature by the ESRB. Developer Rockstar Games’ highly-anticipated open-world sequel recently received age ratings worldwide, both on the PlayStation Store and from official ratings agencies like ESRB and PEGI.

On the game’s PlayStation Store page in the U.S., the game is noted to include “Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Mature Humor; Nudity; Strong Language; Strong Sexual Content; Use of Drugs and Alcohol. In-Game Purchases also listed.” However, in Australia and New Zealand, the store page also notes the inclusion of “Sex Scenes.”

Will GTA VI have sex scenes?

This week, the PlayStation Store page for GTA VI was updated in various countries across the world with content warnings for the game. Additionally, US and UK ratings agencies ESRB and PEGI also rated the game, with ESRB labelling it “M for Mature” while PEGI rated it “PEGI 18” to signal the game was meant for adults.

The game’s exact content warnings differ on the PlayStation Store, depending on which region you’re in. For example, in the United States, the robust content warning includes mentions of “Strong Sexual Content” and “Use of Drugs and Alcohol.” In Malaysia, the full content warning instead reads: “Drugs, Extreme Violence, Nudity, Sex.”

In Australia and New Zealand, the content warnings include an explicit mention of “Sex Scenes,” which is not included in the other regions, which only either note “Sex” or “Nudity.” While these content warnings won’t be surprising to fans of the franchise–after all, when has GTA not been mired in controversy over its adult content?–it does suggest that Rockstar is not looking to water things down with its sequel.

The finer details of these content warnings, such as the context behind the “Blood and Gore” or “Strong Sexual Content” labels, have not been made public yet. ESRB’s rating also includes a mention of “in-game purchases,” though Rockstar has not made public any in-game microtransactions besides the game’s upgraded edition-exclusive content.

GTA VI will launch on 19 November, 2026.
