The Defense Announces Stage Two Groups: Updated

As The Defense moves into its second group stage, there have been a few updates. First, the groups have been announced:

The Defense
Groupstage 2
Sweden mTwRomania Team Dignitas
Australia Natural 9United States Evil Geniuses
France Western WolvesFinland Problem???
Germany PanzerUkraine Natus Vincere
Denmark SK-GamingSerbia Fnatic.MSI
Europe SGC / Germany J4TEurope Mousesports

The final qualifier will be determined by a tiebreaking match between SGC and J4T.

Second, upcoming matches will be played using the new version of Dota 2 and will have no item restrictions. How the remaining twelve teams will utilize the five new items remains to be seen.

Third, on the heels of recent controversy involving stand-in players, joinDOTA has modified the stand-in rule. Previously, teams were forbidden from using stand-ins listed on the roster of other teams in their group; the rule now applies to players listed on the roster of any team in the tournament.

4.4 Standins
Besides the official members, a team may use up to two standins for a specific match. This standin or these standins must not be part of another team inside the tournament. If a team makes use of this rule too often, the administration might interfere.

This change will hopefully lead to teams playing with their own players more often and more consistent rosters. The Defense will resume on Sunday 15 January at 18:30 CET as Natural 9 take on SK-Gaming!

Update: The Defense admin Dennis 'HolyMaster' Schumacher has returned The Defense to Tournament version, meaning the new items and balance changes originating in the 6.73 patch will not be used. He said:

When we decided about the Dota 2 version yesterday, it was based on the feedback of a few participants (other had not responded about that topic yet) and our own opinions, especially mine. Now, one day later, we have received a lot more feedback and some teams were happy with this decision while majority prefers to stick to the stable version for some time. This has various understandable reasons:
- We don't know about the possible bugs yet
- The balance is too unknown. Wins might more rely on discovering imbalances than on actual skill
- Teams don't want to train different versions for different tournaments
- The changes are so huge that they might affect the results of the whole competition

It was a really hard decision to be made, but I revoke yesterday's announcement. The Defense will continue to use the official tournament version of Dota 2. I apologize to everyone who was looking forward to see the new versions with all of its changes in action. Keep in mind that new heroes will be added to the game (and one patch later to Captains Mode) every week nevertheless - you will still see new things on a regular basis.

I hope everyone will enjoy the second stage of the tournament!
