As if we needed more convincing that 2016 will be the year for Heroes of the Storm, Tespa announces tournament for west coast collegiate esports teams.
Last April collegiate gaming organization Tespa teamed up with Blizzard and held the Heroes of the Dorm tournament while the game was still in beta. Blizzard broke grounds and busted skeptics by holding this ESPN broadcasted tournament where 60+ college teams competed for up to 3 years’ worth of tuition money, along with gaming equipment, and Blizzard swag. Since Heroes of the Dorm, Tespa esports “clubs” have sprung up in vast numbers in colleges across the country.
This year the Tespa West chapter announced they’ll be hosting the Collegiate Colosseum tournament in April for Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, League of Legends, Super Smash Bros, and Counter Strike. 30+ schools will compete for prizes over the 2 days at the eSports Arena in Orange County, California.
Competitive players typically transition from other MOBA games to Heroes or started playing with friends who play. Some pro players are barely out of college, or even high school! Now collegiate players will represent their schools and have the chance to show off their skills. It’s no secret there are a lot of positions open in professional teams currently, this could also be the chance for players to show how skilled they are for recruiters.
Teams will obviously be from the West Coast region which includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Arizona, and Utah, but no specifics on what teams plan on competing yet.
There’s also no telling yet whether or not this will be a Heroes of the Dorm replacement or possibly qualifier, since the collegiate popularity has grown immensely in the past nine months.
