Two very different series sent HLE and G2 into a showdown in the next round of the Upper Bracket.
The Bracket Stage of the League of Legends (LoL) Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2026 has begun in Daejeon, South Korea, with
Hanwha Life Esports (HLE) and
G2 Esports taking very different routes through the opening round.
HLE made quick work of
Team Secret Whales (TSW) in a dominant 3-0 sweep, while G2 Esports (G2) had to fight their way back from the brink against
Top Esports (TES). After losing the opening two games of the series, G2 completed the reverse sweep with three straight wins to take the series 3-2.
Hanwha Life Esports sweep Team Secret Whales 3-0
HLE wasted little time asserting control over their opening Bracket Stage series, sweeping TSW 3-0 without allowing the LCP representatives to take a single game.
The LCK side were dominant from start to finish, consistently building leads and giving TSW few opportunities to wrestle control away. Although TSW found moments to fight back, HLE remained comfortably ahead of the series and closed out all three games in around 30 minutes.
G2 reverse sweep Top Esports after falling 0-2 behind
The second series of the day could hardly have played out more differently. TES came out strong and won the first two games, immediately putting G2's Upper Bracket run on the line. With their backs against the wall, however, G2 finally found their footing in Game 3.
The win kept the series alive, and with the crowd in Korea cheering them on, G2 carried that momentum into Game 4. Another dominant performance levelled the series at 2-2 and forced a deciding fifth game.
By then, the series had completely swung in G2's favour. G2 took control of Game 5 and stayed on top until the end, completing three straight wins to turn a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 reverse sweep.
With their opening-round wins secured, HLE and G2 will now go head to head in Upper Bracket Round 2 on Sunday (5 July).
TSW and TES, meanwhile, have dropped into the Lower Bracket. The two teams will face each other on Monday (6 July), with their MSI 2026 runs now on the line.
