A huge W for everyone.
For anyone counting down the months until Grand Theft Auto VI, two questions hanging over Rockstar's long-awaited game may finally have answers: does the game have microtransactions, and does it have generative AI content?
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reportedly ruled out both during a recent visit by Kinda Funny hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller. The pair said they put the questions directly to Nelson while visiting Rockstar North and seeing GTA VI in action.
Grand Theft Auto VI
Release date: 19 November, 2026
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox X|S Series
Developer: Rockstar Games
Price: US$80 for Standard Edition, US$100 for Ultimate Edition
GTA VI reportedly won't include microtransactions
Speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Cortez said he directly asked whether players would be able to spend real-world money inside GTA VI. "Can you use your own real-world money to buy things in the game? No monetization," Cortez said.
That would follow Rockstar's approach with GTA V, where real-money purchases are tied to GTA Online. Rockstar Games currently sells Shark Cards as cash packs specifically for Grand Theft Auto Online. The distinction matters given how heavily GTA Online has been monetised over the years, while GTA V's main campaign remained separate from that economy.
However, the question and answer concerned GTA VI's launch version itself. They do not confirm how Rockstar might handle a future GTA VI online mode, or rule out premium editions, paid expansions, or other forms of post-launch content.
GTA VI reportedly has no generative AI
Miller also said he asked Nelson directly about AI in GTA VI. "I asked point blank, ‘is AI in the game?’ No AI," Miller said. The comments appear to refer to generative AI rather than the traditional AI systems used for pedestrians, traffic, police, and enemies throughout the Grand Theft Auto series.
They also do not necessarily rule out the use of AI-assisted tools somewhere during development. The reported answer only tells us that generative AI is not expected to appear as part of GTA VI itself, including content such as dialogue, voices, artwork, or music.
The comments come just as Rockstar has finally given players an extended look at GTA VI gameplay, showing Jason and Lucia pulling off robberies, escaping police, and tearing around Leonida, alongside activities including racing, diving, nightclubs, and parachuting.
With GTA VI launching on 19 November 2026, Rockstar is finally starting to answer some of the questions players have had about the game beyond what it looks like in action.
