We’re getting a live-action Modern Warfare movie.
Paramount Pictures and Activision have officially confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty movie will adapt the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game franchise. The announcement was made during an event called Fanatics Fest in New York City, where a panel called “Call of Duty in Culture” was held.
The movie’s director Peter Berg appeared at the event to share the news.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare movie confirmed
The upcoming Call of Duty live-action movie adaptation has been the topic of much speculation since its announcement, as neither Paramount Pictures nor Activision had confirmed if the movie would be adapting the games’ campaigns directly, or would instead tell a new story.
This week, fans received official confirmation from co-writer and director Peter Berg that the movie would be set in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe. The iconic game franchise was first introduced all the way back in 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, bringing now-popular characters like Ghost, Soap McTavish, and Captain Price into the fray.
However, the Modern Warfare game franchise has also been rebooted in recent years. Quite some time after the original trilogy of Modern Warfare games was released, Activision rebooted the franchise in 2019 with a new Modern Warfare. The next few games in the series would drastically change certain events from the original trilogy, making it a very different timeline altogether.
It’s unclear if the Call of Duty movie is set to adapt the events of these games (in either timeline), or tell a new story that resides within the games’ canon, much like Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout TV series. Berg also didn’t explain why the movie was opting out of adapting the Black Ops franchise, which is now seven games deep.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to continue the franchise’s rebooted timeline when it launches on 23 October, 2026, focusing on an invasion of the Korean Peninsula by the Korean People's Army.
The upcoming Call of Duty movie will hit theatres on 30 June, 2028.
