Created by a single developer, Meccha Chameleon has defied expectations to become one of 2026's best-selling games.
The Meccha Chameleon craze has shown no signs of slowing down. In fact, it has continued to grow at an astonishing pace. Just four days after reaching seven million sales, Meccha Chameleon accumulated another three million downloads to surpass the ten million milestone–a feat achieved just 16 days after launch.
The milestone was announced on the Meccha Chameleon Steam page, with the developer simply stating: "We hit 10 million sales! Thank you so much for your support!" on 26 June.

Why is Meccha Chameleon so popular?
Meccha Chameleon was created by Japanese indie developer lemorion_1224 and artist Haganeiro in just two months. At its core, the game is a creative game of hide-and-seek set across random maps, where players can pose and paint themselves to blend into the environment or imitate objects. A selected group of hunters must then try to catch all of these "chameleons" before the timer runs out.
With a concept that's perfect for playing with friends–or for creative players to show off their brush precision and hiding skills–the game took no time to spread among streamers and content creators.
Viral clips have emerged showcasing mind-blowing and hilarious hiding antics, from imitating restroom gender signs to seamless blending into painting. Some went a whole different route–painting themselves as Spider-Man attached to the ceiling or dodging gunshots from hunters until the timer runs out.
Meccha Chameleon is also particularly accessible. It has a simple interface, requires only 2.41 GB of storage, and is priced at just US$6, all of which have contributed to its soaring popularity.
With 10 million sales under its belt, Meccha Chameleon now appears to be following a similar trajectory to Among Us during the pandemic, spreading primarily through viral clips, streamer moments, and word of mouth rather than traditional promotions. It was also revealed that Meccha Chameleon spent nothing on marketing, Automaton reported, making its explosive success all the more impressive. The 10-million milestone was achieved exclusively through PC sales on Steam, which remains the game's only available platform.
How does Meccha Chameleon compare to other games this year?
Despite being an indie production with no blockbuster budget, Meccha Chameleon has outpaced some of this year's biggest game launches.
Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem, the fastest-selling title in the franchise, reached seven million sales in under two months, while Pearl Abyss' Crimson Desert recorded six million sales in nearly three months. Meccha Chameleon reached both the seven-million, and now the 10-million milestone significantly faster.
According to SteamDB, Meccha Chameleon recorded a peak of 340,534 concurrent players on Steam eight days ago, cementing its place among the platform's most-played games. It currently ranks 44th on Steam's all-time concurrent player leaderboard, sitting just behind Resident Evil Requiem while ahead of Forza Horizon 6, Crimson Desert, and fellow co-op hit R.E.P.O.
The game also spent time as Steam's top-selling title, although it has since been overtaken by the platform's perennial leader, Counter-Strike 2.
