After 007 First Light, Amazon says future James Bond Games will be handled by Amazon Game Studios

The next Bond game may already be on Amazon's radar.

The future of James Bond in gaming already looks busy. Last week, IO Interactive revealed that 007 First Light has hit 1.5 million copies within its first 24 hours on sale. According to the developer, that made it the fastest-selling release in the studio's history, surpassing the pace set by its Hitman games.

Following a rapid start for 007 First Light, comments from Amazon Games suggest that more entries based on the iconic spy are likely to follow, with Amazon set to play a larger role in future projects tied to the franchise.

What did Amazon Games say about future James Bond games?

While IO Interactive handled publishing duties for 007 First Light, Amazon Games GM of gaming Jeff Gattis has indicated that future James Bond titles could take a different route.

In an interview with Polygon, Gattis explained that Amazon was not responsible for creating the recently-released game despite now owning the intellectual property.

“We did not [make First Light]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP," Gattis said. “but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.” Gattis also stated that future instalments would be "done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios."

How does James Bond fit into Amazon's gaming plans?

During the interview, Gattis discussed Amazon's broader ambitions across games, television and film, pointing to closer connections between the company's entertainment divisions.

“We do see this continued integration of video and movies and video games, where that line is becoming much more blurry," Gattis said. “We think that's a real opportunity for us to create IP that extends, or kind of expands upon, TV shows and movies. So there'll be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video that'll go alongside the games. There's a lot of things we have in the works on new games that'll relate to Prime Video IP.”

The strong launch of 007 First Light comes as Amazon continues to pursue projects based on properties it owns. With future James Bond games now seemingly part of the conversation, the franchise appears set to remain a key part of those plans. Some of these projects includes the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, and a new Lord of the Rings game.
