When is Runescape: Dragonwilds releasing on PlayStation 5?

Runescape: Dragonwilds will be released on PlayStation 5 in Fall 2026, with no final date locked in yet.

Why is RuneScape coming to PlayStation such a big deal?

For 25 years, RuneScape has remained tied to PC and mobile through RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, never making the move to consoles. That changes with Dragonwilds, which becomes the franchise's first PlayStation and console release. Rather than bringing over the long-running MMORPG itself, Jagex is leading the charge with Dragonwilds, a separate survival crafting experience set on the continent of Ashenfall.

What Is RuneScape: Dragonwilds?

Set in a land where dragons have awakened, Dragonwilds blends survival, crafting, exploration and progression systems within the RuneScape universe.

During State of Play, the game was introduced as "Runescape: Dragonwilds is an open-world survival game, where you rise from survivor to dragon slayer. Play solo or with friends as you explore Ashenfall, a beautiful, dangerous new frontier in the Runescape universe, where power is earned and every action deepens your mastery."

The presentation also highlighted the game's progression systems, stating: "With magic at your command, cross deadly terrain, mass forage in seconds, uncover hidden paths, and outmatch brutal monsters, craft stronger gear, master magic, melee and ranged combat and push deeper into unchartered regions of Gillanor."

Players will also be able to establish their own homes and settlements. As shown during the showcase: "Build a home together, farm the land, and fish the waters: Make it yours. Runescape: Dragonwilds arrives day one on PlayStation Plus in Fall 2026."

For anyone unfamiliar with RuneScape, the long-running free-to-play MMORPG first arrived on PC in 2001 and has remained a fixture of the genre ever since. More than 300 million accounts have been created across its lifetime, with the game evolving through multiple versions over the years. Today, players can jump into the modern edition featuring updated visuals and combat systems, commonly known as RuneScape 3.

Alongside it sits Old School RuneScape, a separate version built around the game's earlier design philosophy, complete with retro visuals and classic combat mechanics. At the time of writing, Old School RuneScape had more than 112,000 players online, a figure that would rank it among Steam's most-played titles.

Runescape: Dragonwilds has already passed one million copies sold on PC

The PlayStation announcement arrives after a strong start for Dragonwilds on PC. The game remains available through Steam Early Access, where it has surpassed one million copies sold and earned a "very positive" user review rating.

Jagex has also described Dragonwilds as its "fastest-growing new release" and "a major new chapter in the future of the RuneScape franchise".

Jagex says PlayStation is key to reaching more Runescape: Dragonwilds Players

In a report by Eurogamer, RuneScape: Dragonwilds executive producer Jesse America said that “The world of RuneScape continues to go from strength to strength after 25 years of being an icon of the MMORPG space.” She also shared that "Bringing Dragonwilds and its mix of crafting, survival, and quintessential RuneScape-ness to new platforms like PlayStation 5 is key to unleashing its magic to more players around the gaming globe."

On Dragonwilds joining PlayStation Plus, America said that they were “incredibly proud to have RuneScape: Dragonwilds launch on PlayStation Plus later this year. This means even more gamers can effortlessly team up and explore Ashenfall, go questing across its dangerous regions, battle dragons, skill up on more and more abilities, and ultimately survive its thrall.”

Will Runescape: Dragonwilds release on other consoles?

While this is the first time a Runescape game is making it to consoles via PlayStation 5, Jagex has  confirmed the game's release on other platforms. This was confirmed on Runescape: Dragonwilds' official X (formerly Twitter) account:

“We’ve not told you everything just yet about our launch across multiple platforms yet, and we’ve not let you in on the exact release date,” they said as a follow up post to the announcement. Jagex promises more information “coming very very soon.”
