What is God of War Laufey?

God of War Laufey is an action game starring Faye, Kratos’ late wife who perishes at the start of God of War (2018), thus kicking off the main events of the franchise’s Nordic era. The game got an extended reveal at today’s State of Play livestream, with lots of gameplay showing off its world, characters, and combat system.
The game stars Deborah Ann Woll (Netflix’s Daredevil) as Faye, reprising her role as the giant following her appearance in God of War Ragnarok. It also appears to be set some time after her death at the start of God of War (2018), as Faye comments on her burned clothes–having just been cremated by her family.
The game appears to focus on what happens to gods when they die, with what appears to be deities from outside Nordic mythology, Sekhmet and Begtse, confronting Faye in its debut reveal. Faye confusedly awakens in a new world called the Everywhen, referred to as “the afterlife of the gods”, engages some creatures in Devil May Cry-like action-packed combat, and eventually is captured by a foreign faction.

Faye also exhibits powerful combat abilities thanks to her magical abilities, and seems to eventually encounter new companions in a few talking ribbons tied to a sword, which is stuck in a gelatinous cube. The latter cube also speaks, and sounds remarkably like The Boys’ Jack Quaid. She eventually gains the sword as a weapon, which also features whipping capabilities courtesy of the ribbons.
God of War Laufey does not have a release date yet. The game stars Deborah Ann Woll as Faye (Laufey), alongside Jack Quaid (Phranque) and Perlina Lau (Rue).
