Resident Evil Requiem adds surprise new game mode Leon Must Die Forever, out now

Leon’s biceps are about to be stress-tested again.

Resident Evil Requiem players have a new reason to jump back in this weekend. After reports last week pointed to a new minigame dropping into Requiem post-Golden Week, Capcom has now officially released Leon Must Die Forever, a free minigame mode now available as an addition to the base game.

Capcom announced the update through its official social pages through a quick trailer:

In Capcom’s statement they said the mode “challenges you to clear numerous stages as Leon while unlocking exclusive enhancer abilities.” They also said that multiple difficulty levels are available, including an “extreme high-difficulty mode for only the most confident players.”

What is Leon Must Die Forever in Resident Evil Requiem?

In its official statement, Capcom confirms that the game mode is unlocked after clearing the main story. The new mode swaps Requiem’s slower survival horror pacing for something much more arcade-like. Runs are faster, enemies hit harder, upgrades can completely change your playstyle, and yes, Leon can apparently end up dressed in some very questionable outfits by the end of it.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because the mode is heavily inspired by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s Ethan Must Die mode.

That extra mode turned Resident Evil 7 into a brutal roguelike-style challenge filled with randomised loot, deadly traps, and near-instant deaths. Leon Must Die Forever seems to follow a similar formula, but with more emphasis on build crafting and progression between runs.

Players have already started sharing impressions of the mode on Reddit:

Reddit user Sirca_Curvive described the mode as a kind of randomiser run, a popular genre of mods for the franchise, where players move through different campaign areas using special red doors, while collecting upgrades that can dramatically reshape combat.

Some perks reportedly let players set enemies on fire through parries, massively boost headshot damage at the cost of losing parries entirely, or lean fully into melee builds with unlimited hatchet durability and heavily reduced firearm damage. According to the Redditor, the mode also includes unlockable higher difficulty tiers, meta progression systems, new weapons, costumes, and progressively cheesier Leon one-liners that players can toggle on or off.

And yes, one of the costumes apparently “turns Leon into a furry”.

Why are player reactions about Leon Must Die Forever mixed?

Not everyone was hoping for another Ethan Must Die-style mode, though. While many players immediately jumped into Leon Must Die Forever or planned to spend the weekend grinding runs, others on Reddit said they were hoping for story DLC instead, or content focused more heavily on Grace.

Some players, however, also speculated that the mode could simply be something to keep fans occupied while larger DLC plans are still on the way.

Capcom have previously confirmed that aside from the mini-game, new content, including a story expansion, are in the works and are still in development.
