What is Stranger Than Heaven about?

This week, Sega and Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise developer RGG Studio revealed new details for Stranger Than Heaven, an ambitious new standalone game that takes place over a 50-year time span. The game features multiple locations, ranging from real-life locations like Hiroshima, Japan to fictional ones like Kamurochō, the latter of which has only been depicted in the Yakuza franchise until now.

The story begins in San Francisco in the year 1915, when a boy named Makoto Daito embarks on a voyage to Japan after believing that the United States can’t accept him for his Asian heritage. He chooses to become a stowaway on a ship that happens to belong to a cutthroat smuggler (played by Snoop Dogg, no less).

The game unfolds in the following five cities, across five different time periods:

  • 1915, Kokura, Fukuoka
  • 1929, Kure, Hiroshima
  • 1943, Minami, Osaka
  • 1951, Atami, Shizuoka
  • 1965, Shinjuku, Tokyo

While no explicit ties to the Yakuza franchise were confirmed by RGG Studio in this livestream, a story trailer does confirm that Stranger Than Heaven will explore the origins of the Tojo Clan. The Tojo Clan are unique to the Yakuza franchise, and are frequently heavily featured in its campaigns.

Who is starring in Stranger Than Heaven?

Stranger Than Heaven features a rather large cast, with this week’s livestream revealing a few well-known celebrities among them. The cast includes:

  • Yu Shirota (Makoto Daito)
  • Snoop Dogg (Orpheus)
  • Yu Shinjo (Dean Fujioka)
  • Satoshi Fujihara (Takashi)
  • Tori Kelly (Suzy)
  • Moeka Hoshi
  • Cordell Broadus
  • Akio Otsuka
  • Ado
  • Bunta Sugawara

It should be noted that only Bunta Sugawara’s likeness is appearing in Stranger Than Heaven, as the actor passed away all the way back in 2014. Sugawara had starred in a number of Humanity and Battles Without Honor films, which are centre on the Yakuza, along with a few Studio Ghibli movies like Spirited Away before his passing. In Stranger Than Heaven, his character will be voiced by Takashi Ukaji.

A press release sent to Polygon confirmed that Sugawara appears in Stranger Than Heaven with consent from his family:

"In Stranger Than Heaven, the late and legendary actor Bunta Sugawara appears. Sega received formal consent from his family, and, with materials provided by Toei Company, Ltd–which produced many of Mr. Sugawara’s films, including the Battles Without Honor and Humanity–RGG Studio crafted his CG character design based on archival footage and photographs from the time. The character’s voice is performed by actor Takashi Ukaji, who shared a close connection with Mr. Sugawara."

How does Stranger Than Heaven’s combat work?

Stranger Than Heaven's combat relies on controlling both sides of Makoto's body in battle.

Stranger Than Heaven features an “ever-changing” combat system, which will likely evolve as Makoto grows older and more experienced. Players can move Makoto’s left and right sides independently in battle, unleashing charged attacks, jabs, and tackles in order to keep his foes at bay.

Makoto can also block enemy strikes with one hand while countering them with the other. He can pick up and master an arsenal of weapons–ranging from hammers to katanas–to gain the upper hand in combat throughout the eras.

How does Stranger Than Heaven’s showman gameplay work?

Becoming a showman is its own minigame in Stranger Than Heaven.

Music is a big part of Stranger Than Heaven, exemplified by its protagonist’s talent for creating new tunes of his own. Makoto will be able to pick up and arrange new melodies with the help of composers throughout the game, simply by observing his environment to get fresh ideas.

Additionally, Makoto will slowly but surely step into the role of a showman in Japan. Throughout the game, players can scout skilled singers and performers, create music, and put together an entertaining musical act for the masses. Each show has to be brought to life meticulously, and will bring Makoto’s career of master showman to life throughout the decades.

Stranger Than Heaven will launch sometime in Winter 2026.
