RGG Studio's Stranger Than Heaven will span five eras and five cities, gameplay showcase set for May

Aside from more gameplay footage, some familiar faces were also spotted in the new trailer.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has pulled back the curtain to reveal more details for its upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven, which made an appearance during the latest Xbox Partner Preview on Friday (27 March SGT). During the livestream, the studio shared a brand-new meaty trailer teasing an ambitious multi-era narrative, explosive combat, and a dedicated showcase scheduled for early May. More information was also published on Xbox Wire.

What is the setting of Stranger Than Heaven?

The latest trailer confirmed that Stranger Than Heaven will span five distinct time periods: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. Each era will take place in a different Japanese city, pointing to a wide-ranging narrative scope rarely attempted by RGG Studio in a single title.

In an interview conducted by Xbox Wire, RGG Studio Representative & Executive Producer, Masayoshi Yokoyama  explained that the team is putting significant effort into accurately portraying these settings, noting that the game aims to explore time periods and locations that are not commonly featured in games. He described the project as a “massive undertaking”, with a strong focus on bringing these eras to life in a meaningful way.

Is Stranger than Heaven’s gameplay similar to other RGG games like the Yakuza series?

The trailer highlighted a noticeable leap in visual fidelity from the studio's Yakuza franchise, with upgraded graphics and a more refined art style. Extended gameplay footage offered a fast-paced look at the combat system, showcasing a blend of weapon-based attacks, grappling mechanics, and chaotic one‑versus‑many encounters. Environmental interactions also appeared to play a significant role in combat, as seen in several brief but striking gameplay snippets.

According to Yokoyama, the combat system represents a major step forward for the studio, emphasising that the trailer only scratches the surface of what players can expect.

Beyond combat, the trailer teased several additional features, including tram-based traversal, potential romance elements, and impressively detailed food sequences (is anyone else suddenly craving omurice after that trailer?).

Yokoyama also gave special mention to the music, hinting that much more is yet to be revealed, and suggesting that the soundtrack will once again be a core part of the overall experience.

Despite the wealth of gameplay elements shown so far, it remains unclear whether Stranger Than Heaven will follow the same core gameplay loop as other RGG Studio titles, such as the Yakuza series.

Will there special cameos or returning characters in Stranger Than Heaven?

The Xbox Wire report shares that they saw “familiar faces amongst the cast” to which Yokoyama said, “Oh, I wonder who you could be referring to?” adding that they “weren’t exactly subtle with some of the footage,” promising that “players can look forward to an all-star cast.”

On social media, some players have already started sharing familar faces, like one character who strongly resembles Snoop Dogg. For now though, this has yet to be confirmed by RGG.

How to watch Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven special broadcast on 6 May

Alongside the new trailer, Xbox confirmed that it will host a full presentation titled “Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven” on 6 May.

The Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven broadcast will expand on multiple aspects of the game, including its cast, music, and combat systems. Yokoyama shared that the team is eager to reveal more.

“There’s so much that we’re itching to share,” Yokoyama said, referencing the depth of content still under wraps.
