Diablo 4's Secret Cow Level found at last, but disappointed players think there’s moo-re to it

Getting to the Secret Cow Level is no small beef.

After years of players poking, prodding, and chasing every breadcrumb Sanctuary could throw at them, Diablo 4’s most stubborn mystery has finally been cracked. The Secret Cow Level is real, and it has now been uncovered thanks to the community’s persistence, and one player pulling the pieces together.

YouTuber LoatheBurger shared a full step-by-step breakdown of how to unlock the elusive area, confirming what players had suspected for years, and finally opening the path to Sanctuary’s most infamous herd:

For a community that has been milking every available clue since launch, this long-awaited reveal should have felt like a massive loot drop. Instead, the reaction has been a bit more… medium rare in nature, with some players left less than moo-ved by what they found.

What is Diablo’s Secret Cow Level and why does it matter?

If this is your first time venturing into Sanctuary, the whole “cow level” idea might sound strange. The story goes all the way back to the original Diablo, where players joked about a hidden level filled with demonic cows. It started as a hoax, but Blizzard eventually embraced the idea and turned it into a real feature in later entries.

From Diablo II onwards, the Secret Cow Level became a fan-favourite Easter egg, known for its chaotic tone and generous loot. Expectations for Diablo 4’s version were understandably high. Players were not just hoping for cows, but something that leaned fully into the absurdity.

How do you unlock the Secret Cow Level in Diablo 4?

Getting to the cow level is far from simple. The path is just as elaborate as expected, perhaps even more so. Before even trying to get there, you would need to farm some quest items from the base game and Vessel of Hatred, before you can begin the Lord of Hatred portion of the quest.

To unlock the Secret Cow Level, players need to:

  • Return to the Ked Bardu Gatehouse and select the final sin, Greed
  • Check the updated journal entry that confirms progression
  • Travel back to Philios and take the boat to the cow island
  • Head to the hecatomb area, where the cows can now be attacked
  • Defeat all spawned cows to trigger a golden portal

Once everything is cleared, the portal opens, giving access to the Secret Cow Level. This might sound like a very long and tedious process, and, to many players, it is. However, if you have a friend who’s already unlocked the Secret Cow Level, you can just ask them to “moo” at you.

What’s inside the Secret Cow Level?

Inside, players are met with waves of hostile cows wielding polearms, staying true to the series’ legacy. Pushing further leads to a boss fight against the Cow King himself.

Defeating the Cow King rewards players with the Cow King’s Crown, a Mythic helm packed with deliberately ridiculous affixes tied to each day of the week. One example includes a Friday bonus that boosts “moobility” damage while “mooving”, fully committing to the long-running joke.

Players' reactions to Diablo 4’s Secret Cow Level were mostly underwhelming

Despite the lengthy build-up and the effort required to unlock it, some players feel that the payoff does not quite match expectations. Compared to Diablo III’s Whimsyshire, which seems like a completely different vibe, Diablo 4’s cow level feels more restrained.

Many Redditors, like Callump01, were among those disappointed:

"I'm a little disappointed after seeing the level. Given the amount of effort this took to reach (seriously, kudos) I did expect something a little more... idk, wacky? D3's Whimsyshire was just such a stark contrast to the rest of the game," they said.

Given how long this Easter egg remained unsolved and how complex the steps are, some players expected a more elaborate or surprising payoff, rather than a smaller combat-focused area.

Many others pointed out that there might be moo-re to come in the future. Orbitalbias called the level “Lackluster, if that’s all there was.”  But they pointed out that “the image of the multiple portals suggests there could be more cow dimensions,” and that the only active portal at this point happens to be the one players are able to reach so far.

Whether there’s more to the Secret Cow Level in the future is something players would need to wait and find out, as Blizzard hasn’t confirmed as much yet.
