What is Metro 2039 about?
Metro 2039 follows up on the events of Metro Exodus, featuring a new protagonist known only as the Stranger. The Stranger is a recluse haunted by vivid nightmares, and one day decides to follow them back down the Metro, a dangerous place filled with environmental and monstrous hazards. The Stranger will also be fully-voiced, lending more immersion to their story.
Metro 2039’s setting has also seen some in-universe political upheaval compared to recent entries in the franchise. Underground warring factions are now united under the Nazi-like Novoreich, which is led by the Fuhrer, a Spartan named Hunter. The Fuhrer claims to bring a better life for surface-dwellers, but his authoritarian regime only hurts the Metro-dwellers.
Developer 4A Games has promised a single-player campaign with a heavy focus on its narrative, though horror elements will also be present via the many dangers present in post-apocalyptic Moscow.
Metro 2039 will launch this winter on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
