A new Metro story is on the horizon.
A long-rumoured return to the Moscow underground is finally locked in. 4A Games’ next entry in the Metro series has been officially confirmed as Metro 2039, with its first full reveal scheduled to drop during an upcoming Xbox online showcase later this week.
The confirmation follows days of speculation, with insider NateTheHate sharing on 13 April that the 16 April broadcast would serve as “the venue of choice for the Metro 2039 reveal.”
Xbox later on revealed these details a day later, through Xbox Wire’s official social media accounts, naming the reveal date on 16 April as Xbox First Look: Metro 2039:

Where can I watch the Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 reveal?
The full reveal for Metro 2039 is set to take place on 16 April at 10:00 AM PST / 17 April 1:00 AM SGT, and will be streamed on YouTube via Xbox’s official platforms.
At the time of writing, only the title has been confirmed, with no gameplay or story details shown. However, Xbox Wire has outlined that this will be 4A Games' fourth mainline entry in the series based on the iconic novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky.
Glukhovsky also shared the news on his instagram page:
What is Metro 2039 and where does it fit in the series?
Metro 2039 continues the post-apocalyptic FPS saga that began with Metro 2033 (2010), followed by Metro: Last Light (2013), and Metro Exodus (2019). The series centres on survivors navigating nuclear devastation across Moscow’s metro tunnels and the hostile surface world above.
4A Games previously confirmed in 2020 that development on a new Metro title was already underway, stating that “it’s no secret that we have already started work on the next Metro game.” Since then, the studio has remained largely quiet, making this week’s reveal the first substantial update in years.
Metro 2039 storyline and timeline
While no official narrative details have been shared, Metro Exodus left multiple directions open for the next chapter. The game concluded with Artyom and the Spartans reaching relative safety on the surface, although its alternate ending and earlier hints suggest there may still be survivors left behind in the tunnels.
Past entries have also redefined canon, Metro: Last Light notably established the “bad” ending of Metro 2033 as the official timeline, leaving the direction of Metro 2039 uncertain heading into its reveal.
Metro games on sale ahead of the Xbox First Look
Ahead of the announcement, the existing Metro titles are currently discounted by up to 90% across Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store, offering a chance to revisit the series before the next instalment is fully unveiled.
With only a title confirmed so far, all eyes now turn to 16 April, when 4A Games is expected to finally show what Metro 2039 has in store.
