Resident Evil Requiem director confirms Leon is married–"the answer will become clear some day"

Has the Leon-Ada ship finally sailed?

Resident Evil fans have been engaged in wild speculation ever since the franchise’s latest installment, Resident Evil Requiem, seemingly confirmed that long-time protagonist Leon S. Kennedy has gotten hitched. Concept art for the game revealed that the 51-year-old DSO agent is now wearing a wedding ring, though it is unclear who exactly he’s married to.

This week, Eurogamer reached out to Capcom to ask about Leon’s marriage status and got a clear-cut answer: yes, Leon is married. No, Capcom won’t tell us who he’s married to… yet.

Resident Evil’s Leon S. Kennedy is married, but who is he married to?

After weeks of speculation, Capcom has outright confirmed that Leon S. Kennedy is now married in Resident Evil’s modern-day franchise timeline. While concept art and sneaky off-screen movements had fans speculating that Leon had been in possession of a wedding ring throughout the entire campaign, this is the first time they have received official confirmation of the fact.

Leon can be seen wearing what appears to be a wedding band on his ring finger in Requiem's concept art, which can be unlocked using in-game challenge points. However, the game never outright confirms the identity of his spouse. Fans have since speculated that Leon might have finally settled down with his long-time on-again, off-again love interest Ada Wong, who has shared multiple Resident Evil titles with the DSO agent.

More theories point to Claire Redfield being his spouse, or perhaps even Leon’s Resident Evil 6 companion Helena Harper. There’s always a chance that his spouse is a brand-new character, of course. Eurogamer reached out to Capcom to set the record straight on these rumours, and received a response from Resident Evil Requiem’s game director Koshi Nakanishi himself.

The director said that players would one day find that “The answer will become clear some day, but not just yet,” and that “Leon now has a 'place to go home to'.”

Here is his full statement:

“The answer will become clear some day, but not just yet. What we wanted to convey in the final scene is simple: Leon now has a 'place to go home to', and we hope you can imagine the peaceful moments he spends there.

"Leon is a man who says very little about the things that truly matter, but he would sacrifice himself without a second thought to save a life right in front of him. So what does his ring signify? Resolve? Or a vow? He may never voice the answer himself, but for now, after finishing a long battle, he has a 'place to go home to'. Isn't that enough?”

There you have it: Leon is married, and we’re all going to have to wait for quite some time before figuring out who he’s married to. Hopefully, we'll learn more about Leon's personal life in the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem expansion.
