Here’s a first look at Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy IX series.
The heavily-rumoured Final Fantasy IX animated series is looking more real by the day, thanks to a new look at the project from production company EuroVisual. In a recent update to EuroVisual’s website, the company added a listing for a new animated series called “Final Fantasy, Black Mages Legacy”, along with a synopsis for the project, a new screenshot, and confirmation of its production.
According to the listing, the series will consist of a 10-episode first season.
Final Fantasy IX animated series Black Mages Legacy confirmed as new details surface
Back in 2025, news surfaced of an upcoming Final Fantasy IX animated series being in development, thanks to a French magazine named Écran Total. The series previously surfaced in 2021, as a TV production led by Cyber Group Studios.
That animation studio later closed down in 2025, and Écran Total reported that the Final Fantasy IX animated project had since changed hands to a new studio targeting a 2028 release. The report specifically named Euro Visual as the new studio heading development on the Final Fantasy IX animated series.
This week, an update on Euro Visual’s official website confirmed that it's developing the project. The website was updated with a listing for “Final Fantasy, Black Mages Legacy,” under its other animated projects, with confirmation that the series is now in production–albeit lacking a release timeline.
According to Euro Visual, Season 1 of the series will consist of 10 22-minute-long episodes, which marks a lower episode count than the 13-episode season that was first reported to be in production. A synopsis for Final Fantasy, Black Mages Legacy reads:
“Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last dark mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of ALEXANDRIA, guarded by its inhabitants who are rather friendly, although sometimes very curious. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not meant to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could it be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?”
A screenshot from the series was also included in the listing, featuring two Black Mages resembling the Final Fantasy IX character Vivi Ornitier. Here's the full image:
