Slay the Spire II sells 3.3 million copies as players attempt 25 million runs in first week

Looks like players can't get enough of Slay of the Spire II on early access.

Years after the original reshaped the roguelike deckbuilding genre, Slay the Spire II is already proving just how eager players were for a sequel. In its first week of Early Access, the game has sold 3.3 million copies, with more than 25 million runs attempted so far.

The update came directly from Megacrit in a post published on the official Steam Community page on 14 March, where the team shared their excitement over the overwhelming response from players diving back into the iconic roguelike card battler.

Developer Casey Yano opened the update with clear enthusiasm about the sequel’s reception following years of development at Mega Crit. “HOLY MACKEREL!  But in all seriousness, the response to Early Access has been incredible,” he wrote, saying that  even if he “threw out [his] back from overworking,” he’s quite in “high spirits”.

Casey went on to thank both the development team and the community for supporting the launch. “Thank you to the team for dealing with my constant shenanigans and working extra during this busy rush!”

According to the developers, the numbers behind the launch stretch far beyond the game’s sales milestone. In the same post, community manager Demi revealed that players have already attempted more than 25 million runs in the game during its first week alone.

“Slay the Spire 2 has been out for merely a week and we have already hit 3,000,000 units sold with more than 25,000,000 runs attempted!!” the post stated, adding that the run total may actually be even higher since tracking began slightly after launch.

More than 25 million attempts in Slay the Spire II has been recorded in its first week.

The strong player engagement has also translated into major visibility on Steam. The long-awaited sequel to the genre-defining deckbuilding roguelike quickly shot to No.1 on Steam’s global Top Sellers list, climbing over major releases like Marathon and Resident Evil Requiem shortly after release.

Player numbers have remained just as impressive. The game recorded a peak concurrent player count of more than 574,000 in its first week, and at the time of writing still sits at 563,762 active players, with a 24-hour peak of 572,332.

The team also hinted that more reveals could be on the way, telling players that exciting things will be shared in the future while encouraging fans to continue exploring the current Early Access build for now.

Slay the Spire II updates will arrive without a strict roadmap

While excitement is high around future content, the team also made it clear that they will not yet commit to a strict roadmap. Instead, updates will roll out once they are ready. The studio confirmed that previously announced additions, such as alternate Acts for Acts 2 and 3, more cards, new events, and additional gameplay content, remain in development.

The team emphasised that balancing the roguelike deckbuilder will be an ongoing process as they analyse player data and community feedback. They noted that player reports have already helped them fix several softlocks and other issues since launch.

In the nearer term, upcoming updates are expected to include improvements such as a revamped badge and scoring system, friends-only leaderboard filters, accessibility options like a phobia mode, additional art and VFX, balance patches, Steam Workshop support, multiplayer quality-of-life features, and official Twitch plugin integration.

To help test these changes, Mega Crit has also introduced a public beta branch on Steam, allowing players to try new features before they reach the main version of the game.

The post also touched on other topics, including Slay the Spire physical merchandise and an expansion for the tabletop board game. The full update can be found on the Steam community page

With millions already climbing the Spire during its first week, the Early Access journey for Slay the Spire II is only just beginning.
