Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Resynced confirmed, as Ubisoft outlines future of the franchise

Looks like this ship is finally getting ready to sail.

Players hoping to sail the Caribbean once again have something to look forward to. Ubisoft has officially confirmed that a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is in development, marking the long-rumoured return of one of the franchise’s most beloved entries.

The announcement surfaced on 5 March through the official French X account for the Assassin’s Creed series, which posted a teaser image referencing the remake.

The same image appeared in a broader blog post in the official website discussing the future of the franchise, although as of the time of writing, that blog post has since been taken down after being publicly available for several hours.

In the said blog post, Ubisoft confirmed the remake’s title as Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, bringing the pirate adventure of Edward Kenway back into focus. No additional details about gameplay or release timing were shared alongside the teaser.

The announcement follows months of rumours, leaks, and PEGI board listings that suggested Ubisoft had been revisiting one of the franchise’s most popular entries.

Ubisoft confirms Black Flag remake while shifting focus to upcoming projects

According to the now-removed blog post, Ubisoft is gradually shifting its focus toward upcoming titles in the series, while winding down support for its latest release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

The company stated that Shadows is entering its final phase of post-launch support. Updates will continue, but at a slower pace, with smaller patches and “a few surprises” still planned before development attention fully transitions to future projects.

Alongside the Black Flag remake confirmation, Ubisoft briefly addressed other titles currently in development within the franchise. One of these is Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, the next major mainline entry, though the company indicated that the project is still some distance from release.

Ubisoft also reiterated that multiplayer-focused project Assassin’s Creed Codename Invictus is progressing. The title is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and involves developers who previously worked on For Honor. The studio described Invictus as “a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise”, while noting that it may differ from circulating rumours. Meanwhile, the mobile title Assassin’s Creed Jade remains in development after an extended period without major updates. Ubisoft also noted that a 60 FPS update for Assassin’s Creed Unity is planned for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Before Ubisoft’s confirmation, the Black Flag remake had already appeared in several leaks and reports. A cryptic comment from Edward Kenway's voice actor in June 2025 sparked speculation that the remake is on the way.

Then in December, the title Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced first surfaced through a PEGI board listing, reinforcing earlier reports that Ubisoft had been working on a remake of the 2013 release. Finally, in January, fans spotted new domain name registration related to the project.

Previous reports by news outlet MP1st also suggested the project could be a substantial rebuild with visual and gameplay upgrades, potentially bringing it closer in quality to more recent entries in the series.

Outside of games, the publisher confirmed that work is continuing on the live-action Assassin’s Creed series for Netflix, with further updates expected in the future.
