Casting for Amazon’s God of War series is taking shape, with Atreus now locked in.
Seeing God of War move from controller to screen is starting to feel real. Amazon Prime Video has officially cast Callum Vinson as Atreus in the upcoming God of War live-action series, bringing one of PlayStation’s most recognisable father-and-son duos closer to live-action form.
With production ramping up and major roles now locked in, fans can finally picture what Kratos’ brutal journey through the Norse realms might look like beyond the console.
According to the official press release by Amazon MGM Studios on 9 February, Vinson joins Ryan Hurst, who will take on the towering role of Kratos, alongside a stacked supporting cast. Max Parker will play Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson steps in as Thor, Mandy Patinkin takes on Odin, Alastair Duncan voices Mimir, while Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka appear as the bickering dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri.
Amazon’s God of War series will follow Kratos and Atreus in the Nine Realms
The series is set to adapt the story of the two most recent God of War games, following Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus as they journey across the Norse realms to scatter the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother. Along the way, Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to survive as a god in a merciless world, while Atreus pushes his emotionally distant father to reconnect with his lost humanity.
Atreus is described as a gifted archer who grew up isolated in a remote forest, raised almost entirely by Faye. Curious, compassionate, and eager to prove himself, he struggles to understand his cold and distant father after her death. Their strained relationship sits at the heart of the story, shaping a journey that blends large-scale mythological spectacle with quieter, emotional moments.
Vinson previously appeared in Amazon’s Dead Ringers and has also featured in Long Bright River, Poker Face, and FBI: International. He is set to appear in Netflix’s The Night Agent Season 3, as well as Peacock’s Crystal Lake, where he will play a young Jason Voorhees. He is represented by Rebel Creative Group and Innovative Artists.
Amazon has handed God of War a two-season order, with pre-production now underway in Vancouver. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, while Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the opening two episodes. Executive producers include Cory Barlog, Maril Davis, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon, with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios co-producing alongside PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
With casting locked in and production moving forward, the long-awaited live-action God of War series is finally taking shape. For gamers, that means Kratos and Atreus’ brutal Norse saga is getting ready for its next big leap.
