PlayStation shuts down Bluepoint Games after cancelling live-service God of War project

Sony has shut down Bluepoint Games, creator of the recent Demon’s Souls remake.

Sony is shutting down Bluepoint Games, a game studio it acquired under the PlayStation Studios umbrella in 2021. Bluepoint was responsible for heading development on Demon’s Souls (2020) and Shadow of the Colossus (2018), and thus had made a name for itself by developing back-to-back remakes of iconic PlayStation titles.

Now, the studio is set to close its doors in March, as per a Sony spokesperson speaking to Kotaku.

PlayStation shuts down Demon’s Souls remake developer

PlayStation is shutting down the game studio responsible for developing Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (2015), Shadow of the Colossus (2018), Demon’s Souls (2020), and more. In a note shared to staff this week (courtesy of Kotaku), PlayStation head Hermen Hulst noted that the company is “operating in an increasingly challenging industry environment” with “rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds.”

Hulst continued:

“To navigate this reality, we need to continue adapting and evolving. We’ve taken a close look at our business to ensure we’re delivering today while still well-positioned for the future. As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March. This decision was not made lightly. Bluepoint is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. I want to thank everyone at Bluepoint for their creativity, craftmanship, and commitment to quality. Where possible, we will work to find opportunities for some impacted employees within our global network of studios.”

Hulst ended the note by affirming that he is “confident in the direction” PlayStation is headed, and that the company has a “robust roadmap for FY26.” No further reason was given for Bluepoint’s shutdown beyond the aforementioned “challenging industry environment” and its related factors.

However, a Bloomberg report from 2025 noted that the studio had previously been developing a God of War live-service game. The project was cancelled in January 2025, leaving Bluepoint and Sony to work out their next project together. The studio has not released a new game since 2020’s Demon’s Souls remake, though it did contribute to the development of 2022's God of War Ragnarök.

Bluepoint Games was originally founded in 2006, the same year in which it released its first game, entitled Blast Factor. This was the first of many collaborations it would have with Sony Interactive Entertainment and the PlayStation brand, as it went on to later work on ports and remasters of games like Gravity Rush, Ico, God of War, and more.

The studio was acquired by PlayStation Studios in 2021, a fact that was originally announced by Hulst himself.
