God of War Ragnarök’s Thor is pulling double duty as Kratos.
Amazon Prime Video announced this week that its upcoming live-action God of War TV series has found its Kratos. Actor Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead) has been cast as the Spartan gaming icon in the series, which has already received a full two-season order.
Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in upcoming God of War TV series
God of War Ragnarök players will already be familiar with Ryan Hurst, as the actor also played Thor in the game. It looks like the Amazon series is more than willing to double-dip into the gaming franchise’s existing pool of actors to find its new cast–albeit by placing them in different roles.
Consequently, it appears that Christopher Judge, who played Kratos in the Norse-era God of War duology, will not reprise his role in this TV adaptation. However, the actor did take to social media to congratulate Hurst on his new role:
The series is yet to cast the rest of its main cast, which will likely include actors for Kratos’s son Atreus, the disembodied head Mimir, and the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri.
Amazon’s God of War TV series is set to adapt the events of God of War (2018), with Kratos and his son Atreus embarking on a long and dangerous quest to spread the ashes of his wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, they encounter figures from Nordic mythology, such as Freya and Baldur.
The series was first announced back in December 2022, and will likely enter production in 2026. Ronald D. Moore is serving as the series’ showrunner, taking over production after the series had initially lined up a different creative team.
The God of War TV series has no release date yet.
