The next-gen Xbox console might be just one year away.
Microsoft is reportedly preparing to launch its Xbox Series X|S successor in 2027. According to a Windows Central report citing its own sources, the tech company is looking to release a next-gen Xbox gaming console with PC capabilities, similar to Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine.
This lines up with recent statements from AMD CEO Lisa Su, which also pointed to a 2027 launch for the next-gen Xbox console.
Next-gen Xbox console reportedly set for 2027 launch window
Microsoft is reportedly looking to release its next-gen Xbox console, succeeding the Xbox Series X|S line of hardware, sometime in 2027. According to Windows Central, this launch window hasn’t been finalised at Microsoft, as it also “hinges on improvements to Windows 11 and other factors,” thus making 2027 the “best case scenario.”
The outlet also provided more details on the next-gen Xbox console, which is set to feature an AMD semi-custom SoC (system on a chip). The console is set to be a Windows 11 gaming PC in all but name, albeit with the added feature of running existing Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and other backwards-compatible Xbox games.
Much like the Steam Machine, it is designed to be a gaming PC built for the living room, with a “TV-first console-like interface.” The Xbox interface will work in tandem with Windows 11 much like it does on current Xbox ROG Ally devices, with users also being able to exit to Windows on the console and run other PC programs.
Much of the finer details around the next-gen Xbox console, such as its price, are currently in flux, as Windows Central reports that ongoing hardware manufacturing factors like memory shortages are complicating things for Microsoft. Interestingly, Valve also recently delayed launch timings and price details for its new Steam Hardware line for similar reasons.
Meanwhile, Sony is reportedly looking to extend the PlayStation 5’s life cycle, putting the PlayStation 6 on hold for now.
