Nintendo dropped a new look at the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie during this weekend’s Nintendo Direct presentation, which focused solely on the animated movie. Nintendo’s latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is bound to be a crowd-pleaser, as it is jam-packed with references to not just the Super Mario Galaxy series, but other iconic titles in the Mario franchise as well. The trailer was introduced by renowned Nintendo executive and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto during a Nintendo Direct livestream.

The trailer begins with a familiar location: the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey, seen here with its inverted pyramids, Tostarenans, and all. Mario and Luigi head into the vast desert on a job to unblock a Warp Pipe, which the Tostarenans seem to believe is work too dangerous to do themselves.

The duo make use of Fire Flower power-ups and head into a crevice in one of the inverted pyramids. They emerge in a cave, whereupon the iconic Underground theme from Super Mario Bros. begins to play. After finding the blocked Warp Pipe, they begin to hear strange dinosaur-sounding roars emitting from inside the Pipe.

The creature inside the pipe flees, but when Mario extinguishes his flame and reaches out to it, it reveals itself to be none other than the adorable green dinosaur Yoshi. Later parts of the trailer, which feature a quickly-cut montage of action-packed scenes from the movie, suggest that Yoshi quickly ingratiates himself as part of Mario’s friend group, much to the dismay of Toad.

Other clips in the trailer show off Princess Peach and Mario platforming in the bowels of a fiery dungeon, Luigi, Mario, and Yoshi facing off against a Big Cheep Cheep, and lastly, the inclusion of Baby Luigi and Baby Mario. The de-aged siblings are spotted at the end of the trailer with Toad and Yoshi, as Yoshi attempts to protect them from an actual T-Rex.

The T-Rex appears to return from Super Mario Odyssey’s Cascade Kingdom. We also see Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi fighting Yakitu, while Peach attempts to defend against an egg-flinging Birdo. There’s a lot going on in this trailer, most of it comprised of references to classic Mario titles.

The Nintendo Direct concluded with a nod of Yoshi’s legendary status among the colourful cast of Super Mario characters, while Illumination head Chris Meledandri confirmed that animation work on the film was now complete. The movie appears to be in the midst of finishing up its soundtrack and audio work, with Brian Tyler returning to score the sequel.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will now hit theatres on 1 April, 2025.
