Bowser’s teeny tiny fury gets unleashed in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
This week’s Nintendo Direct presentation gave fans an early look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which follows up on 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie with Bowser Jr. as its new antagonist.
The Nintendo Direct also confirmed the appearance of Rosalina and multiple worlds from Super Mario Galaxy, seemingly promising a faithful adaptation of the beloved platform game.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s latest trailer locks in Rosalina and Bowser Jr. casting
This week, Nintendo held a livestreamed presentation to drop a teaser trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. While the presentation was fairly short by Nintendo Direct standards, it did give us confirmed casting for two new characters in the upcoming animated sequel.
These characters are:
- Rosalina (played by Brie Larson)
- Bowser Jr. (played by Benny Safdie)
Both characters are featured heavily in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy, a platform game originally developed for the Nintendo Wii. The game follows Mario’s quest to save Peach from an interstellar kidnapping courtesy of Bowser, during which he also meets the cosmic guardian Rosalina.
This movie does appear to differ from the game’s story in certain points, however. For one thing, the main antagonist of its plot appears to be Bowser Jr., who seeks to free his father from captivity. Bowser was shrunk to the size of a Tic Tac after consuming a mini Blue Mushroom in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, putting him effectively out of commission for the foreseeable future.
The movie also appears to mix in elements from other Super Mario titles, beyond Super Mario Galaxy alone. A distinctive pyramid from Super Mario Odyssey can be spotted, and there appear to be nods to Super Mario Wonder and Super Mario Sunshine via Bowser Jr.’s design and paintbrush.
However, there’s nary a Yoshi to be seen in this trailer, which is strange given the adorable green dinosaur’s popularity. The movie’s casting is also a little surprising. While Brie Larson stepping in as Rosalina is a fun choice given her public adoration of Nintendo games, Benny Safdie is an unconventional pick for Bowser Jr. The actor-director is known for playing more dramatic roles in Good Time, Oppenheimer, and The Curse.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released on 3 April, 2026 in the US, and on 24 April, 2026 in Japan.
