Emmanuel Macron congratulates Sandfall Interactive on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's triumph at The Game Awards.
Sandfall Interactive has earned a personal shoutout from French President Emmanuel Macron following its historic dominance at The Game Awards, where the studio’s featured game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, swept an impressive nine awards.
Last Friday, The Game Awards celebrated the best games and esports of the year, giving major accolades to games, along with new game trailers and premieres. To little surprise, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33–one of the most talked about games of the year–stood out as a major highlight throughout the event.
The game was widely expected to be a strong contender, but it exceeded even the highest expectations placed upon it by nearly sweeping the ceremony. It took home an unprecedented nine awards, including the coveted Game of the Year honour.
This overwhelming victory earned Sandfall Interactive praise from President Emmanuel Macron. He wrote on his Instagram (translated via Google Translate):
“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has just been named Game of the Year in Los Angeles. A historic first for a French title!
Great pride for Montpellier and for France. Congratulations to the Sandfall Interactive team. For future generations and those that follow!”
A historic win for French game development
The win marked a truly historic moment in gaming. The title received a record-breaking number of nominations and went on to claim a record number of wins, including the two most prestigious awards. Remarkably, this achievement came from Sandfall Interactive’s very first game, developed by a relatively small team with a modest budget.
This is not the first time the French president has publicly praised the game. Macron had previously highlighted Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 following its successful launch, calling the studio a “shining example of French audacity and creativity”.
“A million copies and, to date, one of the best-rated games in history–and yes, it’s French!” Macron wrote on Instagram.
