A battlefield that shifts under your boots? Now that’s a proper challenge.
Helldivers 2 might be gearing up for its wildest twist yet. Arrowhead Game Studios is experimenting with a roguelite mode, confirmed directly by studio founder Johan Pilestedt in a surprisingly low-key reply on X that sent the community spiralling into excitement.
Replying to X user @Be_Spiritified, who shared their wish for “some sort of roguelike/endless mode where we fight waves and waves or keep completing objectives on the same map,” creative director Johan Pilestedt simply said: "Hey! We have a prototype of a rogue-lite mode—it changes the game fundamentally!"
That single sentence was enough to spark excitement across Super Earth, marking the first time Arrowhead has openly acknowledged the mode’s existence, even if it could still early and experimental.
What Arrowhead has actually confirmed
Pilestedt’s comments make one thing clear: work on a roguelite mode is happening internally. Still, there isn’t any information around. Arrowhead hasn’t announced any roadmap, release window, or concrete details about what this roguelite mode involves.
Even without more information, Helldivers fans are already hyped about the reveal. X user Be_Spiritified, who was the one to suggest this online, responded by sayin, “That’s awesome! You guys are way ahead of me then haha, looking forward to how you guys shake things up.” He also thanked Pilestedt for making time to reply.
The thread quickly filled with with GIFs and memes of players expressing their excitement, while many others, like X user @TylerPenguin2, made suggestions on how it might work, saying, “Honestly, that sounds so cool. I like the Escalation Trials mode from The Outlast Trials as an endless challenge mode, so I’d take the debuffs mechanic from it and add it to the mode where you keep completing objectives. More debuffs get added as you progress.”
Many others, like X users @KartalEagleEye and @GreatApeFriday, also said that having this mode would bring them “back to the game full force.”
The reveal has sparked plenty of excitement, even if it arrived in the most unexpected way. For now, though, it remains an early prototype with no indication of when, or if it will reach players. Arrowhead often experiments widely before committing to new features, so this feels more like a peek behind the curtain than a guaranteed update. Should the team decide to push ahead, fans may be in for a bit of a wait before the mode properly comes into focus.
