Helldivers movie taps Fast and Furious director Justin Lin for upcoming movie adaptation

Sony and PlayStation Productions have tapped Justin Lin to bring Managed Democracy to the big screen.

Helldivers fans are getting a new mission, and this time it is hitting the big screen. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have tapped Justin Lin (known to be the director of Fast and Furious 3–6) to lead the charge on the upcoming Helldivers movie.

Justin Lin set to bring Super Earth’s all-out warfare to cinemas

According to an exclusive by The Hollywood Reporter, Lin will direct the live action adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ co-op shooter.

He is also producing the film through Perfect Storm Entertainment, alongside Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The script is written by Gary Dauberman, known for his work on It and Annabelle.

Helldivers first launched in 2015, while Helldivers 2 became a breakout hit in 2024 with more than 12 million sales on PS5 and PC within its first four months. The series recently expanded to Xbox, widening its community of players who know the importance of teamwork, clean extracts and avoiding a misthrown stratagem on your squadmate’s head.

The movie was first confirmed earlier in January 2025, at the Sony CES 2025 press conference. The film will draw from the games’ core premise of elite troopers fighting Bugs, Cyborgs and the Illuminate to protect the empire of Super Earth.

The announcement continues Sony and PlayStation Productions’ push into game adaptations. Their film Uncharted earned 407 million dollars globally, while PlayStation Productions also works on Twisted Metal and HBO’s The Last of Us.

Lin’s slate already includes One-Punch Man and the Netflix adaptation of Brzrkr. His directing credits cover several Fast and Furious films, which together have earned more than 2.6 billion dollars worldwide, as well as Star Trek Beyond. His recent film Last Days premiered at Sundance.

A release date for the Helldivers movie has not yet been confirmed, but with Lin attached and a completed script, the project is now advancing through production like a clean dropzone insertion.
